SPARTANBURG, S.C. — South Carolina authorities have charged a man arrested in Tennessee with murder in the death of a former sheriff.

Charlie Snipes

Multiple media outlets reported that 82-year-old former Sheriff Charles Snipes was found dead at his used car lot in Spartanburg early Tuesday. Snipes was sheriff of Spartanburg County from 1961 to 1968.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger says an autopsy showed Snipes died from a blow to the head.

Authorities say 33-year-old Jeffrey Eugene Bailey of Spartanburg was arrested during a traffic stop in Erwin, Tenn., on Tuesday driving Snipes’ pickup truck.

Warrants accusing Bailey of murder and grand larceny were signed early Wednesday.

Bailey had been released from jail in Spartanburg on Monday after he had been charged with failure to register as a sex offender and for probation violations.
