LAWRENCE, IN – Police arrested a 37-year-old man at his home in Lawrence and were awaiting results of a blood-alcohol test Sunday night as they investigated a hit-and-run crash that killed an Indianapolis woman.
Roger Ordonez was arrested on a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He was found Sunday afternoon at his Lawrence home, where he was arrested and transported to the Arrestee Processing Center after a blood draw.
Ordonez told investigators he had been drinking beer in the hours before the crash, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.
Lola Herman, 81, died of injures suffered in the crash at 2:16 p.m. Sunday. Police say the Indianapolis woman was driving north on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street when a Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the driver’s side of the Saturn Vue she was driving.
Herman was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition and died about 4 p.m.
The driver of the Jeep was reported to have run a red traffic light before the crash, according to an IMPD release. The release said the Jeep driver fled the scene after being picked up by another person driving a Ford Expedition with chrome wheels and dark tinted windows.
