UTAM – A polygamist Utah family caught the attention of TV viewers Sunday with the debut of “Sister Wives” on TLC. The show premiered as the first of seven installments following the lives of Kody Brown, his three (soon-to-be four) wives and 13 children.
Unfortunately for the Browns, the show also caught the attention of local Utah police who are investigating the family for bigamy, a third-degree felony offense in the state. Police Lt. Darren Paul said the investigation is ongoing and evidence will be turned over to the County Attorney General’s Office for review and possible prosecution.
A spokesman for the attorney general said the office does not have the resources to pursue polygamists unless there is evidence of other crimes such as child abuse or trafficking.
The Brown family acknowledged the possible legal ramifications of their television appearance but were willing to take the risk.
