UTAM – A polygamist Utah family caught the attention of TV viewers Sunday with the debut of “Sister Wives” on TLC. The show premiered as the first of seven installments following the lives of Kody Brown, his three (soon-to-be four) wives and 13 children.

Unfortunately for the Browns, the show also caught the attention of local Utah police who are investigating the family for bigamy, a third-degree felony offense in the state. Police Lt. Darren Paul said the investigation is ongoing and evidence will be turned over to the County Attorney General’s Office for review and possible prosecution.

A spokesman for the attorney general said the office does not have the resources to pursue polygamists unless there is evidence of other crimes such as child abuse or trafficking.

The Brown family acknowledged the possible legal ramifications of their television appearance but were willing to take the risk.

Sister wife? One is plenty. I married Miss Right and then learned her middle name was "always".

If they're stupid enough to spill the beans on TV, then they need to be charged.

Utah has cases like this because of it's heavily mormon background. However, this is not a commonly accepted idea in the mormon church anymore (I learned this first hand from a mormon friend). Most of the people who do this are sticking to a doctrine that was almost immediately dismissed early on after more men joined the mormon church. While this could be seen as simply a different lifestyle, (it's practiced in other countries) it is still illegal here. If this dude really wants to put up with three (soon to be four) spouses, he should try calling his legislator first or leaving the U.S. Most people I know can barely handle their one significant other at times, so I do not understand why someone thinks having four or sharing their s.o. with other people is a good idea.

Polygamy simply does not have a place in today's society in America. I guess there was a time when there were more women than men in a select area and travel was not near as common or easy as it is today and they needed to produce children to maintain a positive population growth. That just isn't the case today and it is generally frowned upon in America. Also the tension and jealousy in a household with multiple spouses has to be very strong and frankly weird. I know that I could not do it nor would I ever want to be in a position that it was expected or needed.
