PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 14-year-old boy police say stole a van and crashed into another vehicle, killing a 9-year-old girl, is scheduled to appear in court.

The boy, whose name was not made public because he is a juvenile, is expected to appear in Family Court on Monday to face charges including reckless driving, death resulting, and being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police say they were chasing the boy at about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on Route 10 in Providence when he crossed the median and struck a car driven by 29-year-old Stephanie Flynn of Cranston.

Police say Flynn’s daughter, fourth-grader Alexis Silva, died. Flynn, and two other children were seriously injured and remain hospitalized.

The driver of the van also suffered minor injuries and was held in a juvenile detention facility.
