RAYVILLE, La. (AP) – State police say three men have been arrested in the shooting death of Sgt. Thomas M. Alexander of the Rayville Police Department.

Troopers say the 57-year-old Alexander was shot and killed while responding to a burglary-in-progress call at a home on U.S. Highway 80, east of Rayville, Saturday night.

Investigators say 52-year-old Robert J. Walker of Rayville, 30-year-old Anthony D. Oatis and 33-year-old Richard L. Long Jr., both of Monroe, were booked with first-degree murder of a police officer and aggravated burglary.

Richland Parish Sheriff Charles McDonald tells The News-Star that Alexander was shot when he confronted the suspects inside the home. McDonald said Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police are investigating the officer’s death.
