Teen Accidentally Texts Sheriff to Buy Pot
Associated Press
September 03, 2010
HELENA, Mont. (AP) – General rule of thumb: when looking to buy marijuana, don’t text the sheriff. Authorities said a Helena teen sent out a text message last week in search of pot, but instead of contacting the drug dealer, he hit a wrong number and inadvertently sent the message to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton.
The text read, “Hey Dawg, do you have a $20 I can buy right now?”
Dutton told the Helena Independent Record he initially thought it was a joke, but he quickly realized it was a real request for drugs. He responded to the text, and a detective pretending to be the dealer organized a meeting with the boy last Wednesday.
The detective spotted two teenage boys and a man at the arranged meeting spot and called the number three times to make sure he had the right person. Dutton said when the detective showed the teens his badge, their faces turned white and their knees began to wobble. One of the boys even fainted.
The man in the group turned out to be the father of one of the teens, and no citations were issued after the parents of both boys got involved.
“Trying to buy drugs is a crime, but it’s probably worse that they had to face their parents,” Dutton said.

i have a similiar story to this one....my son has been into drugs lately...i was trying to find out where he was getting it...i let him used my cellphone one day and he was texting his drug dealer...a couple days later this number comes up and is harassing my son for the money that he owes her. i then asked her who is was..she stated her name...i said money for what..drugs?? she said yea what do you think. the she stated im not messing around no more. So we had a picnic at the local beach for my cousins graduation. i was present but my son wasnt. So i texted back and told them to come to the beach for the money. sure enought they came..i didnt no it was them till they texted back and said hey were here in the white truck where are you. I walked closer. and they texted again. then called. i was standing next to them and my phone rang. she said where the hell are you this isnt funny.. i said you know what is funny is this is my child that you are selling drugs to and now i have the proof. they took off so fast. i then went to the sheriffs department and handed over the phone with the messages. A couple days later she is caught..with marijuana..thanks to the texts she now has numerous drugs charges on her..just thought i would tell yous my story on the texting situation.

I truly hope that this will scare the kids straight. Unfortunately, no thug ever learns the first time around.

One evening a younger deputy called me a said a female called his patrol car cell phone, asking him if he wanted to "party and pick something up". We decided to call her back and set up a buy at her trailer park (I know, shocking). We told her we'd be in the laundry room at a certain time and when she showed up, she was searched and found to be in possession of meth (as we had ordered) and was arrested. Turns out, she was given that number earlier in the day by the day shift deputy, because she was a witness to another crime.

This is great. I hope now the parents can change the road their kids were going down for the better.
