AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police cars will be outfitted with improved dashboard cameras in a plan to abandon use of outdated videotape.
The Austin City Council on Thursday approved spending $15.5 million for the new cameras and digital equipment. The cameras can be set to automatically activate when officers open the doors of the patrol car.
Officers currently must manually start the tapes.
Police say the updated equipment will help with evidence gathering.

VHS is so problem prone and storage is a nightmare of the bulky tapes. Good investment in a tight budget year.

In Seattle they run all the time. Seems like the easiest way to go, but I imagine data storage is a pain.

We have the same system here. It's not perfect by any means, but a huge improvement over our previous VHS system.
