Police Shoot, Kill Man Armed With Knife, Meat Cleaver

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police in Philadelphia say a man armed with a knife and a cleaver was shot after a Taser jolt failed to stop him from charging officers.
Police said the 53-year-old North Philadelphia man, whose name has not been released, was visiting a family friend Friday when he became enraged and the resident fled to call police.
Lt. Frank Vanore says officers arrived and tried to talk to the man with the aid of crisis intervention officers but were unable to calm him down. Vanore says the man was armed at various times with a knife and a cleaver.
The man eventually charged at a group of six officers gathered on the street, and a 22nd District officer fired, striking the man in the chest and arm. The man was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital just after 4 p.m. Friday.

The police did a good job of stopping a mad man, and taking him from the streets imagine if he attacked some little kid, or some woman; wouldn't really be a nice sight.
Also would you rather lose and good officer of the law, or a mad man?
Think about it like that.

I believe the officer acted instinctively and took care of business, its true that knifes kill faster then guns do. If you ask me, that man wanted to die. Why else would someone run toward armed police officer's with a knife?

Someone is going to say, "Why didn't they shoot him in the leg?" A knife in someone's hands KILLS people!!! A knife will kill you faster than a gun will. Shouldn't have brought a knife to a gun fight!!!

Political Rant:
We really need to do something about all this meat cleaver crime. I think we need to outlaw the use of meat cleavers except by licensed professionals, such as butchers and executive chefs. Additionally, meat cleavers should be serial numbered, and they should be required to imprint that serial number into any meat or bone that they chop. Further, possession of a knife in addition to a meat cleaver should carry a mandatory sentence enhancement of at least five years. Black plastic handles on meat cleavers should be illegal, and automated or portable meat cleaver sharpening devices should also carry a sentence enhancement. Meat cleavers in use by the above-mentioned licensed professionals should be chained to the work surface with a chain of no more than one foot in length, and capable of supporting a load of no less than 20,000 pounds.

Been there, done that (only in MO, not PA). Sometimes it's the only choice you're left with, and I hope the officers remember that the guy with the knives called his own fate.

Well done officer! It's too bad it had to be done, but it had to be done. These are the kinds of situations where there's no other choice. Enjoy going home tonight and know that your actions were appropriate to the situation.

Why are officers using a TASER against a man with a Knife/Meat cleaver? That's just the wrong choice.

Its too bad but that officer will go through days and weeks of BS in order to meet "shoot protocol" when it sounds like he had no other choice. srt205 I'll disagree about tazers being taken out of the police arsenel. We taze a good many suspects here in Metro Atl. and it's kept a lot of good cops from no other option than to kill someone. I know it's our job to shoot if we must, but it's a helluva lot easier to say than to live with.

This same thing happened about 2 years ago in Pittsburgh while I was interning with the ME's office. Must be a PA thing.

I wish we would do away with Tazers personally. To many rely on it and use it incorrectly. Just my .02!!

Definitely a correct use of a deadly weapon. Regrettable, but it is great that the officers got to go home safely to their families.

If you come at someone with an edged weapon, or weapons in this case, it's deadly force. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Good shoot.

Monday morning quarterbacking sucks.
In the academy they are training to use an ECD using your judgment about the situation. Let's say you have 5 officers and one of the 4 decides to go less lethal why would attempting to use the ECD be a wrong choice? It's not the wrong choice because it shows you tried to do everything to avoid a fatality.
What if the guy was out in the open and officers had cover, why would deploying the ecd first be the wrong choice? If your not in the situation you can't speculate as to what the proper decision would have been.
From what the article reads the decision that IAD will make should be easier as they tried everything they could, that should let the officers involved rest a little easier at night.
