PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police in Philadelphia say a man armed with a knife and a cleaver was shot after a Taser jolt failed to stop him from charging officers.

Police said the 53-year-old North Philadelphia man, whose name has not been released, was visiting a family friend Friday when he became enraged and the resident fled to call police.

Lt. Frank Vanore says officers arrived and tried to talk to the man with the aid of crisis intervention officers but were unable to calm him down. Vanore says the man was armed at various times with a knife and a cleaver.

The man eventually charged at a group of six officers gathered on the street, and a 22nd District officer fired, striking the man in the chest and arm. The man was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital just after 4 p.m. Friday.

It's too bad things happened the way they did but that officer made the right choice. I am an FBI certified negotiator and I can tell you first hand that negotiations don't always work. Some people are completely lost and there is no talking to them. Maybe he was mentall ill or something. None the less, this officer made the right choice and went home to his family after his shift. As for madman7419......... you are barking up the wrong tree on this site. Why don't you go hug some bunnies and sniff some flowers and try to save the world. Nobody cares about your stupid opinion so go scratch. You have no idea what it is like to be a police officer so anything you say means nothing to us. LE brothers and sisters stick together!!!

Madman obviously doesn't have a clue about this job and what someone can do with a crude weapon. I have been kicked, hit and cut on the job and the only reason i did not fire on the person who cut me is because I didn't see the weapon even though I used my training to the max. He needs to get on the street and learn something.

Sounds like the police tried every option they could, before taking a life. At that point , its u or them. lets face it , no one wants to go home at the end of the day, with death on there hands.

    Madman 7419,
Shame you weren't out front. I would have loved to see you and five friends in the same situation. My sorrow goes out to the man's family and the officer that was forced to end a life to save others.

It is sad that the man lost his life. However when you charge the police whit a clever and a Taser jolt failed to stop him from charging officers. I was in the Military for 20+yrs I also was the logistics for a Military Police for 7yrs. I also do Ride out with the local law enforcement. These officers have one of the most if not the most dangerous jobs there is. They are never really treated right it is always the fault of the policemen when some one gets shot or killed the media and the public for the most part make the Police the bad guy! And when a police officer get hurt or killed no one says anything. Kinda like the military you get killed and it ok however you kill an insurgent then you are a murder. I know that these are strong words but they speak the truth Just like A police officer shoots someone and it is within the deadly force rules everyone see's it and wants to put there word in it on how the officer was wrong, then on the other hand a officer gets killed and NO ONE SAW ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to support are Law enforcement officers and stand behind there good morals The officer had every right to protect him self and the other officers God the man did not stop after being tased. OK I have gone far enough I am not a LEO nmcopper51965 however I and others do support you and this site That is one of the reasons I looked for this site it is better then allot of other stupid sites that don't support you. I know that you do not like non LEO's however I love the law enforcement I do lpan on getting on a force when my shoulder recovers . To all the law enforcement officers DO NOT STAND DOWN MAKE SURE YOU GO HOME TO YOUR LOVED ONES . I will keep you all in my prayers.

    Madman 7419,

I see by your profile that you are not a LEO. (If you are than forgive me) As you are not a cop, please get off these sites and don't comment about things you know nothing about and are not trained for and therefore can' t handle. Stick with what you are trained to do and join sites for your own line of work not ours!!!!!!!!!!! You won't find me on a lawyer, engineer or construction worker site. So please stay off of ours. This go for the rest of you non LEO's as well!!!!!!

Hey Madman7419...have you ever been cut by a knife or meat cleaver? Would you gladly allow the man to charge you with one and not fight back? Didn't think so. They had plenty of patience. Read the report again. The had a negotiator and they hit him with a taser. A taser is a less than lethal weapon. A knife and a meat cleaver are LETHAL weapons. They gave him every opportunity to stand down and he didnt. If this guy had charged you or your family member and they didn't shoot him you would sue the officers and department. News flash, if the officer is dead or incapacitated there is no one to save your ass. Unless you have been in this very situation do not try to condemn the honorable. Stop Monday morning quarterbacking. Call your local law enforcement agency and apply for a few ride-a-longs and get a small taste of what we deal with everyday. No one likes a cop until they need one...welll remember that next time someone is breaking into your house.

Madman.. Police officer's are drilled into their head that no matter what, they have to meet this goal at all costs and that is GO HOME after his/her shift. I do agree with you in the patience bit but are u going to be the one to tell the family of the fallen officer why you didn't act in time?
