Police Shoot, Kill Man Armed With Knife, Meat Cleaver

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police in Philadelphia say a man armed with a knife and a cleaver was shot after a Taser jolt failed to stop him from charging officers.

Police said the 53-year-old North Philadelphia man, whose name has not been released, was visiting a family friend Friday when he became enraged and the resident fled to call police.

Lt. Frank Vanore says officers arrived and tried to talk to the man with the aid of crisis intervention officers but were unable to calm him down. Vanore says the man was armed at various times with a knife and a cleaver.

The man eventually charged at a group of six officers gathered on the street, and a 22nd District officer fired, striking the man in the chest and arm. The man was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital just after 4 p.m. Friday.

That was four days ago when you posted, upstatenylawman. Just let it go and move on.

Sad current of affairs, but glad the officers were safe. Along with people who think this was a load of crap for the officers to kill the man, two things:

    1) Hitting a target the size of a bullseye moving and wobbling 9 miles an hour is no easy feat. It just can't be done. You're gonna miss, and you're gonna get people killed because the threat wasn't neutralized.

    2) You wanna know something funny that could've sent everyone, even the guy with the knives home safe and sound? He drops the knife. That's it, everyone keeps their life! The officers aren't gonna go on a rampage because the guy decides to give up.

I see by your profile that you are not a LEO. Stick with what you are trained to do and join sites for your own line of work not ours!!!!!!!!!!! You won't find me on a lawyer, engineer or construction worker site. So please stay off of ours. This go for the rest of you non LEO's as well!!!!!!

Great job to the officers. I see some comments that are somewhat against the use of the taser. We trained with the taser and when One has the taser out the cover officers have their guns out. Fact is they tried to save the offenders life but he was hell bent to die. If the officer was alone I would say no taser, draw your gun because there is no way to be sure the taser will work. With back up officers providing cover it never hurts to try. Proper use of taser and deadly force. Not that I am politically correct but the attempt to first use the taser will help with public opinion because other options were attempted but failed. The Officers had no choice. There are always those that no matter what we do we will be wrong in their eyes but most will see this for what it is because of the attempt to use other tools before shooting.

Its obvious Mouse you are not a Cop. If you did blow out his knee cap you probably would get sued by him and then you would have to pay for his rehab. Also there is a 21 foot rule. A person can charge in officer and stab him within 21 feet before an officer can draw his gun. How would you feel if you tried to knee cap him and miss him and your partner ends up dead.
Youre heart is in the right place but cops always shoot to stop the threat which means center mass its not like tv shows where they shoot the gun out of their hands. Take some criminal justice classes or apply to be a police cadet, you will get into the world of the police officer.

A knee shot would not stop the guy, but could only be to change his mind. As his mind was already out to lunch, that would likely be a poor strategy. Just like shooting a charging wild boar, a human can have 4-7 seconds to act before passing out after a boiler room shot. That's enough to run 40 yards and put you in a pine box. You can't mess around with somebody in a wild boar state of mind.

I MAY BE MISTAKEN, mouse223, DO YOU WORK IN LAW ENFORCEMENT? IF SO WERE YOU TRAINED TO COWBOY AND SHOOT THE GUN OUT OF THE SUBJECTS HAND OR TO SHOOT CENTER MASS TO STOP THE THREAT? JUST CURIOUS.

Officers are trained to defend themselves and the safety of the public. You shoot center mass to stop the threat, and if that does not work then you try for a head shot.

I voted this down because of two reasons: One, it is a shame an angry man was shot and killed, and two, I wish the officer tried harder not to kill him. I would have blown out his knee =) Still, lesson learned, never charge a group of 6 officers with a knife and a meat cleaver XD

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i think it was a job well done, im pretty confident in saying I hardly think the police officer enjoyed having to shoot that man, however its his job to protect, not only civillians but also his fellow officers.
