NCDMV Inspector Collapses, Dies Following Academy Training

RALEIGH — Timothy Charles Barnes, 38, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, July 28, after collapsing on Tuesday following physical training for the NCDMV License and Theft Bureau’s inspector program.
Barnes died at Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he was hospitalized following his collapse. The Bureau is reviewing the training requirements and regimen to determine if training activities were a factor in Barnes’ collapse.
Barnes had worked for 10 years as a sheriff’s deputy with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and had also served as a school resource officer in Nash County before joining the License and Theft Bureau on May 17. He had just completed the Bureau’s nine-week basic school training on Wednesday.
Barnes was a Clinton, N.C. native and received a bachelor’s degree from N.C. A & T University. He was one of 13 recruits undergoing training for the License and Theft Bureau’s inspector program at the N.C. Justice Academy in Edneyville, N.C.
