WASHINGTON – The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he’s “not going to put up with any civil disobedience” when the state’s new immigration law takes effect.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he’ll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

Arpaio told ABC’s “Good Morning America” he doesn’t know “what the big hype is.”

He says it’s “a crime to be here illegally and everyone should enforce” the law.

Swatness, like many have said, it is a name that was used back in the 50's in an actual operation so it is history. It referred to the fact that the illegals often crossed using the river and they were 'wet' from crossing the water. Yes it is now a racial term unfortunately and should not be used to describe anyone who is just of Hispanic origin. When I worked the border in the early 70's we sometimes did refer to illegals as "wet" but we did not refer to Hispanics in general as "wet". Just the way it was and it was not racial. I too am getting sick of the PC garbage which is why "Officially" the Feds are trying to refer to "Illegal Aliens" as simple "Undocumented workers" even though many do not work and collect welfare. It is more PC and infers that Illegals simply do not have proper paperwork and that they are here working, none of which is really true.

swatness... all name calling, insults, racism, ect hurts and should be avoided. However, I never hear protests or uproars when terms like "white trash, redneck, honky, cracker ... " are used.

Oh, sorry PL. I mean W.T. words, R word, H word and C word.

swatness, Operation Wetback was the real name of the solution to a problem in the 50's. It is not a racist remark. Don't knee jerk because people refer to the operation. I'm personally sick of everyone trying to be PC all the time. It was Operation Wetback, not Operation Sack-Up the Illegals. If anyone remarks in a racist way, that will be dealt with.

Gee, touchy subject, eh? Whether the name is offensive or not, that's the name of the operation. History books also show the propagandized information about Jewish people in WWII having enlarged noses and rotund bellies, or are we to remove that vital piece of history due to "political correctness"?

Back on topic...Sheriff Joe for President!

Swatness, I understand your frustration and I am sorry you had to go through such racism and discrimination. However "Operation Wetback" was a huge crackdown on illegal immigrants who possessed jobs in the US. The problem was not that they were Mexican, African-American, or whatever race, the problem was that they held jobs in a country they were illegally living in, which prevented legal aliens and/or citizens of their own country from getting a job. In the 1950's, the term "wetback" was not considered offensive. It was a term that referred to immigrants who crossed the Mexican border illegally. Over the years however, it became worse because it was used as an insult for any hispanic person. Racism is hurtful. Racism is real. It has devastating consequences. Had the Operation been called "Operation Illegal Immigrant," that would have been politically correct. Yet it was the genius of Eisenhower that this operation came to exist. It was never intended to be racist, it was intended to solve a lot of the crime that has occurred in the Mexican-Texas border and not just the influx of illegal crossing of the border; these aliens didn't understand the law of the land. Some of them were bringing drugs across borders in exchange for safe passage into the States. Some were running from Mexican authorities. Yes, some were good, decent, law-abiding people, yet the way they tried to gain access to this country violated US Federal, State and Local laws.

Whoever is using the term "wetback", I think you already know but I will say it anyway. This is an extremely racist and offensive term. This operation took place in the 1950's and its name shows the ignorance of that time. Would it be appropriate to type "Operation N word" in this forum. I don't think so. And it's not appropriate to use the W word.

To use that word shows pure hate. It is the same as calling a black person the N word. I am hispanic and grew up hearing this derogatory term used in a disgusting manner.

I call on the moderators of this site to delete any post using this term. I also call on any policelink member to refrain from using this disgusting term in the future.

Jeremiah, I agree, Ive met many a Soldier in the Army who was not a U.S. citizen and was in the military to not only serve but to speed up the citizenship process. Usually those folks come from Mexico, the Phillippines, Kenya, and Russia in my experience. Good for them, they choose to do what most Americans dont want to do.

I had forgotten about, "OPERATION WETBACK". when a million illegals left the USA. Let's see how the new law works before all the panic of the public on this issue. The press has stirred up people to overreact.

I read the law and all these liberals are blowing it way out of proportion. All the law states is that someone who is ALEADY in custody have his status checked. There still has to be PC, not just snatching people up off the streets! If they are found to be illegal, they are held on state charges of tresspassing and after they finish their time for that, then they are turned over to the feds for them to decide what to do with them.
