Sheriff Joe: I'll Arrest Immigration Protesters

WASHINGTON – The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he’s “not going to put up with any civil disobedience” when the state’s new immigration law takes effect.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he’ll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

Arpaio told ABC’s “Good Morning America” he doesn’t know “what the big hype is.”

He says it’s “a crime to be here illegally and everyone should enforce” the law.

@rickm: while I think Joe Arpaio is an idiot (and probably a murderer), I haven't heard him say he intends to arrest people for protesting. It's if they engage in civil disobedience (blocking access to his jail, disrupting traffic, etc.) then he'll arrest them. Why would you have a problem with that?

    @swatness123:

The Arizona law said specifically that race and/or suspicions about national origin could not form the basis for a stop. The suspect has to be stopped for some other lawful reason.

A cop stops a guy lawfully and the only ID he can provide is a Mexican Matricula Consular ID. No driver's license, no state ID (either of these require either a birth certificate or prood of legal immigration status). Probably has no insurance. Mexican Matricula Consular IDs are *only* issued to Mexican nationals. So you know he's a Mexican national (or claimed to be one). So where's your problem with this? Being here illegally is a federal crime. You have a known Mexican national that has no U.S. ID and no immigration papers. Are you suggesting that the police shouldn't investigate his immigration status given this *ample* evidence? Does this scenario not give rise to reasonable suspicion?

As far as the federal/state angle goes... Possession of methamphetamine is illegal under federal law. It is also illegal un the laws of all 50 states. Are you (and people like you) suggesting that since it is covered by federal law, state laws addressing the issue are unconstitutional and that state police officers shouldn't enforce the federal law??? Is that what you are saying?

HOOAAH copper380 I goota agree with you there. Born and raisred in Tucson Az, let me tell you about illegal crime. Not a minute went buy that Station 13, Tucson Fire Dept, was getting a call for medical service in its district, and the Eastside Station for Tucson Police Dept. YEA buddy they stay busy too, but that was back in the 80's and 90's I really cant tell you about now. but they are only 70 miles from Nogales Mexico, I really dont see a problem with the B1070 since it will help to curb the crime rate as well as protect the citizens of Arizona, from the Grand Canyon, to Yuma, Phoneix to Naco. oh yes lest we forgot our neighbors of Naco Arizona, that have banned together to patroll thier own streets and question anyone that does not live in Naco because of thier crime rate.

Go Joe ! What a novel idea. You can safely protest from INSIDE the jail and get fed to boot.

I know, I know......I talk to much! another thought, I was just on a call with a legal Mexican immigrant and he was nervous. There are a lot of LEGAL immigrants that will not call the police due to corrupt police in their countries. They do not trust the police anyway. I have been thanked by legal and suspected illegal immigrants for making them feel safe. Knowing there were twice as many robberies than were reported because fear of the police, I was willing to walk (yes, unass my car) the trails and parking lots of the communities (not in the open but the shadows). I even fully dressed in camo to include a face net and stood in bushes and treelines. Through contacting several people that never knew I was there until I walked up on them and hearing groups saying, I think I see him over there, but I was not there, from groups I had made contact with before, coupled with several simple arrests with a zero tolorance policy, ie disorderly, possession cds, underage smoking/drinking ETC... there was a big difference in foot traffic and the number of robberies. I was actually told that this made them feel safe, trust the police and feel better about walking in their neighborhood. Even the illegals that would not call the police obtained police services, learned to trust the police and increased community relations.
The "problems" caused by enforcing the law (i cant believe I just said that) can be countered by different tactics. Besides, making contact with criminals and finding out they are here illegally will make the community safer and that will generate less calls for service in the same neighborhoods where illegals that are not breaking the law will probably never be questioned. These criminal illegals that victomize their communities and use intimidation are another reason many will not call the police. Another thing, get rid of illegals and the criminals that prey on them will not be there, again lowering crime. What was the problem with the Az law again?

Police should be given every legal right to question people residential statues in this Country, due to constantly terrorist activities that occurs in the United States. Depriving Law Enforcement of this right is simply opening doors for any types of organized crime to increase. This is not a matter of racial discrimination; it is a tool to keep Americans safer.

Also, if you are hispanic and refuse to call the police because you are here illegally than you CHOOSE to be a victim, there is nothing I can do for you. I have responded to several situations with people I suspected of being illegals and helped them because they are victims of crime. I did not probe into their status because they were victims. If you are stopped for committing a crime, or suspected of committing than I should be able to look into their status as a citizen (no matter their race). This has to do with basic police work for decision to arrest because of flight risk, being able to positively identify......etc.

    swatness123,
I see one major flaw with your thinking, the scenarios you created are Americans, not illegals. You, and several others but NOT the majority, are attacking something that is not a big deal. How can someone that is not an American citizen be protected under the Constitution of the United States. Why is it beople believe there would be racial profiling? Is there anything in the law that says the person must be a suspected Mexican? The person could be any race and from any country, including terrorists which may be arrested and held before they kill your or my families. Bottom line, You come here legally you have nothing to fear and you are welcome, illegal..........GET THE HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY!!! I too am a Vet and did not decide to join the military to fight for illegal people in MY COUNTRY so they can be all safe in their bed at night within the land I may leave and die on foreign soil. I joined for the CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!! Unconstitutional my a$$! Besides, I have problems dealing with illegals that speak in other languages in MY COUNTRY. When I deployed to foreign lands I attempted to learn the local language because I was in another country and respected the people, their country and their language. So I am asking nothing more than the same respect in return, come to MY COUNTRY speak MY LANGUAGE. You should have the same issues because it is YOUR COUNTRY TOO! If we enter any other country illegally we would be arrested, why do we make it so easy to be invaded. WE ARE A COUNTRY WITH BORDERS AND THE JOB OF OUR GOVERNMENT IS TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THOSE BORDERS FOR THE GOOD OF THEIR PEOPLE. IF THE CURRENT POLITICANS REFUSE TO PROTECT US FROM INVASION THAN I THINK IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THEM............ALL OF THEM (excluding Sheriff Joe who is doing what the majority wants even though the LOUD minority is crying about it)

swatness123, you said something that is not true. You said "illegal mexican immigrants...were heavily recruited to work at those jobs that nobody else wanted". My son and I worked on a roof today and we are going to work on a roof tomorrow. We re-roofed a house last week. We do this for a living,We are 2nd and third generation "Mexicans" and we enjoy working in the construction industry, rain or shine. However, we have to compete with illegal immigrants who do not pay income tax, are not licensed contractors and don't buy liability insurance . Some get free or low-cost dental and medical care for themselves. Some live with a woman who may be a US citizen. Some of these receive food stamps, subsidized housing, welfare checks.

Dishonest people hire illegal immigrants because they can afford to work for less, so when I bid on a construction job I have to bid against these people. Many Americans cannot afford to work in an industry that is saturated with an undocumented illegal work-force. Many Americans who want to work are being told "I will only pay $xx because I can get someone else to do it for less."

I believe in the greatness of America, but Greed, Mr.swatness123, creates the myth that there is work no one else wants to do.
I am fairly fluent in Spanish. My dad was a Spanish-language teacher. He taught me to never be ashamed of my Mexican heritage, but to always remember that I am an American first.
I am also a police officer, part-time but a police officer nonetheless. One reason I enjoy it is because laws are black and white. How would you like it if undocumented illegal immigrants began to replace us in law enforcement? What if your city council decided to cut costs and to justify it proclaimed that no one wants to be a peace officer, therefore undocumented illegal immigrants are being hired to risk their lives in a job that nobody else wanted? Please consider what that scenario would result in.

    Please put America first.

Porkchop I dont know what you mean by how I'm "acting" but yes I've been serving in the military and as a cop since I was 18 years old. Sorry bro but if you mean I dont fall into the status quo in this forum by glorifying Sheriff Arpaio and the Arizona Immigration law then no I guess I "Don't act like it". I will always enforce the law that I am sworn to uphold. That doesn't mean i have to believe in the law nad It's my constitutional right to lobby against it and to voice my opposition against it. Just like I am doing in this forum.

I disagree with this Arizona Law and other comparable laws, and apparrently so do a lot of other Americans. Including District Judge Susan Bolton who, like I said before, has already gutted the Arizona law by issuing a temporary injunction that halted key parts of SB 1070, The Arizona Immigration Bill.

US District Judge Susan Bolton agreed to block the section of the law that required local and state law enforcement officials to check the immigration status of those they suspected were illegal immigrants.

That was the provision that critics said would lead to racial profiling.

I say good for her as I am a critic of this law and as I have said before, other similar state laws.

You can say what you want about me but that doesnt' change the fact I am a respected police officer and retired military veteran. There are officers all over this country that agree with me in opposing this law. Do a google search of Arizona officers suing the state to overturn this law.

And when I say opposing, I don't mean failing to do our jobs. We do our jobs to the best of our abilities. But we also use all legal and constitutionally allowed avenues to oppose this law that we feel is unconstitutional, illegal and disgusting.

As I mentioned people across the nation by the thousands are protesting this law. It reminds me of the citizens that protested the Vietnam war and the citizens that protested the treatment of blacks and the Jim Crow laws. They protested and many were arrested. How many times was Martin Luther King arrested?

They were protesting unjust circumstances in their world.

Porkchop do you think that if you had been a police officer in the 1960's and your supervisor told you to arrest a group of black teenagers, because they were breaking the law by sitting at the front of the bus you would enjoy or agree with that law? White people in power at the time thought they were protecting the white citizens. with these ridiculous laws.

How bout if you were a german police officer in 1930's Germany and you supervisor told you to arrest local jews for security of the state or confiscate bibles. Do you think you would agree with or enjoy enforcing that law?

My point is just because I am a police officer I do not have to agree with every law there is and do nothing to change it. I can actively, legally oppose any law I disagree with. Because brother every law ain't righteous.

I do my job to the letter. Always have and always will. Whether you disagree with my opinion or not.
