Sheriff Joe: I'll Arrest Immigration Protesters

WASHINGTON – The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he’s “not going to put up with any civil disobedience” when the state’s new immigration law takes effect.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he’ll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

Arpaio told ABC’s “Good Morning America” he doesn’t know “what the big hype is.”

He says it’s “a crime to be here illegally and everyone should enforce” the law.

I understand your frustration and still stand by my thoughts/ feelings. A majority of the people in Az want this law. The states ARE allowed to enact their own laws!! Even those covered by federal law. All laws are covered by federal law in some way. The federal laws are put in place and the states are allowed to add to or make more strict, just not take away from the existing law. The Feds use money against the states all the time to blackmail the states into following the "rules" set forth by the feds. The feds are overstepping their bounds by dictating to the states but it is so used to gettingg its way because of the blackmail it believes it can tell the states what they can do. Example of this is the national speed limit set by the feds many yesrs ago (55 mph). The states did not have to recognize this but were forced into it. The feds held money that was for the states until they complied with the federal guideline. Az has the right to enact laws that add to the fed guideline/law and the feds are trying to take away the rights of the sttate gov'ts and that is plain wrong. As far as the "illegally detained", that happens all the time during investigations. People are arrested and detained for murders, robberies, assault, abuse......ETC. and later released when it is found there was a mistake. As long as the officer/dept was acting in good faith there is no illegal detention/arrest based on the information at hand at the time. I do feel bad that this happened to these citizens but considering how many were arrested and how many were detained and released becauseevidence later revealed they were actually citizens, the % of people that were actually illegal compaired to those that were not illegal is pretty good. weare face with decisions every day, sometimes we make the rigt one, sometimes we do not. Bottom line is we have the power to take away peoples freedom and sometimes mistakes are made even though we try our best not to make mistakes because when we do innocent people suffer. It is part of the job, it sucks, but it happens. As faras evidence being distroyed, I have no idea what is happening, was not there and cannot comment. If this did happen and is not just a rumor to hurt Joe's administration the truth will come out and he will have to pay the piper. The feds are great at leaking info to discredit anything they do not support. I will have to wait and see on that. I have no hard feelings toward you ( swatness123), you are entitled to your view, as am I. I just love a good debate. We fight for each others rights every day, I fought for yours to have your opinion and you fought for me to have mine. I am a proud vet and am glad we live in a country that we can voice our views in a peaceful forum. Hope yu have no hard feelings and I would love to sit and have a "beer summit" with you, we could really get into some good discussions!! LOL. I just hate to see where this great country is headed and believe if we do not start getting drastic in our actions we will lose our society to those that feel entitled and those that believe they are the select/ elite few. Leave the states alone to govern themselves and do your job as a fed entity, protect the country as a whole.

ACLU aside, it doesn't matter who represents these citizens who were illegally detained. Whether it be the ACLU or the law office of Wee, Gipem and Howe The point is that they were illegally detained. Copper if your Mother, Father, son or daughter had been arrested in one of Joe's sweeps I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you would be highly PO'd. Why? Because they are American citizens.

I have a hard time believing if your wife came home two days late and she said she had been in jail because of a mixup during an immigration sweep, I can just imagine your reaction or the reaction of any officer I work with or know if it was their family member.

Most of us would raise all kinds of hell with that local police department or Sheriff's department. But if it is something happening to people far away from us to people we don't know then we thinks its ok.

I can't really see you telling your wife or Mother, "Sorry folks they were just doing their job, now git in the kitchen"

It is not right and better yet, it's illegal.

Under our system of government, there is only one boss when it comes to issues of immigration. That is the federal government. You can't have a system of 50 state bosses in the immigration system because it includes issues with law enforcement ,foriegn policey and humanitarian issues. 50 states trying to make 50 different immigration laws will make an incoherent system.

The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Arizona and its governor, Jan Brewer, seeking to invalidate the state’s immigration law on the grounds that it is preempted by federal immigration laws.

The Police Chief's of Phoenix, Tuscon and Flagstaff to name a few back the Federal lawsuit.

Attorney General eric Holder said a second lawsuit on racial profiling and civil rights violation grounds is possible.

Joe needs to go. He has made maricopa County the target of the federal government, Which is elected by us.
He is bringing heat on the county and the state.

He is doing things which are unconstitutional. The Feds and many of us frontline troops recognize that.
When Joe does things he gives us a temporary feelgood feeling where we say. "yeah Go get em Joe"
Kinda like a Rambo movie where Rambo wipes out a thousand bad guys by himself. Then reality sets in and we realize this could not happen in real life because of all the implications.

At my department Policy dictates that we don't enforce immigration laws. I would be willing to bet that that is the case with the majority of approximately 14,000 Law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Why? Because administrators know what their limits are according to state and federal laws. But I guess Joe is smarter than all of these administrators put together. \

Officers that are so concerned should go to their supervisor and say "Hey lets do what Joe is doing in Maricopa County". They will probably promote you on the spot and fire the chief because he hasnt thought of it. No, probably not. He will probably look at you irritated and tell you to "Shutup and go pick up the trustee, the station needs to be cleaned up".

This state law usurps Federal authority to enforce immigration issues. Next Maybe Arizona will start printing its own money, declare war on Mexico and excommunicate itself from the Federal system and make Sherriff Joe the president... No wait those are also jobs of the Feds.

Sheriff Joe sets a dangerous precedent... The government recognizes and they will handle it accordingly...They are already in the process.

    But thats just my opinion.

I do feel for the citizens that claim to have been done wrong, but as soon as you wrote ACLU, you lost me. The ACLU has their own agenda and does not care about people. The ACLU only wants to be heard to get their own views recognized (the minority). Now if you told me Jessie Jackson was speaking for or representing the people you speak of I would take some stock in what is claimed..............well on second thought.................................

In afederal civil rights lawsuit against the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an MCSO sergeant has admitted that the department has been destroying documents and e-mails directly related to the MCSO's anti-immigrant sweeps. This, despite numerous requests by the plaintiffs' lawyers for those documents and e-mails since the beginning of the Melendres v. Arpaio suit in December 2007.

The ACLU is representing Julian Mora, a legal permanent resident who has lived in the United States for 30 years, and his U.S. citizen son, Julio. The two claim they were the subjects of racial profiling — stopped while driving their truck for no reason other than being Latino.

The 66-year-old Julian Mora, who is diabetic, said he and his son were driving to work when a Maricopa County officers cut him off, then ordered the two men out of the truck, frisked and handcuffed them. The officers then transported the Moras to the worksite of Handyman Maintenance, Inc., where the officers were conducting a raid. The ACLU suit alleges the men were held there and denied food, water, or contact with the outside world for the next three hours. Neither was allowed to use the bathroom, although the older Mora has difficulty controlling his bladder due to his diabetes. He said he was finally allowed to urinate in a public parking lot.

The two men were eventually released later that day. They say they still don’t know why they were stopped.
Sheriff Joe is being accused of civil rights violations by the federal government.

Get off it people! If we sneak into another county, Mexico for example, then they will throw our sorry asses in jail never to be heard of again. We have no problem allowing people to LEGALLY be apart of our country. I should not have to work my life away to barely pay for my own bills because I have to support anyone who wants to break the law by coming into this country ILLEGALLY, work for cash, not pay taxes, get foodstamps, get free government health care, and they still get money to start a business....money that I, as a natural born citizen, cannot get! And yet, it is my tax dollars that pay for those grants! In Louisiana it is the LAW for any adult to carry a valid state issued ID. The police can ask anyone for this identification. Why should they not be able to ask for papers to prove you are allowed to be in this country? Man, the south needs to secede again...we will win this time!

I also think there is a small line that was first used sometime around the begining of this great country. I am not sure where I read it and i will try my best not to miss quote. I think it goes............."WE THE PEOPLE"!!!!! I don't remember reading ..........Me and a few others! The majority is a brick of the very foundation of our birth. Our founders spoke FOR the people, NOT TO THE PEOPLE. They spoke on their behalf and what they wanted (the majority). There were a few smaller groups, as there always is (the minority) that had other plans and wanted to establish other kinds of government that would allow a few to be the ones that had the power. It may appear that is the way it is now, but it is not! WE THE PEOPLE have the power to run our government. The elected officials are there to represent the majority but they have thrown the constitution and the wishes of the majority out the window and do as they please. so again I say again, ........"Just seems like a lot of politicians and judges forget where they are. This is still the United States and majority rules." What is the vote? the vote is for the majority to be heard, unfortunately the majority is not heard due to the silent majority not being active in their government so the smaller groups are heard. The silent majority is not being so silent anymore and will be heard. Sheriff Joe stands for the majority and I stand with him. The AZ law stands for the majority and will win some day. The great thing about the majority, if things are not being done to represent the majority we can vote out those that will not speak FOR us. so, for the elitists out there, can you tell me where I read the line...."WE THE PEOPLE", or have you forgotten that such a line even exists and why it was written?

I realize what the constitution is and does. The laws being passed/not passed or passed and blocked and the programs being started that take rights away from you and me while catering to people that do not have a say or go against the majority is what I am talking about. The constitution is a living document and can stretch and grow to adapt to the times. The changes made should reflect the MAJORITY. I Government is there to protect us from each other and foreign powers. The problem now is Government now believes it is there to protect us from ourselves. ably, if you do not believe in majority rules then you would be an elitist and believe the people need only a few ("the elite") to make a decision for our own good whether we all agree with it or not. I would hate to see where we would be headed with people with those views in charge.....................OH CRAP, TO LATE!!

@Copper380 who said, "Just seems like a lot of politicians and judges forget where they are. This is still the United States and majority rules."

Not that it has anything to with this case but um, no, the Constitution rules. I'd hate to see what we'd become if the majority ruled.

It appears my comments have stirred the pot a little. copper380...Bump brother. Swatness IF your are who you say your are. then we are indeed brothers in blue and any one in a badge is a brother of mine. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just dont agree with yours or your outlook on this law I beleive you are looking at it from the wrong perspective and buying into the lies and other BS that the left wing (anti american pantiewastes) want you to believe about this law. And to any others that believe this law is unconstititional i ask when is it wrong to defend your borders, your homes and your way of life?
