PHILADELPHIA – Police said a prison guard was fatally shot late Sunday night in North Philadelphia home as he was leaving for work.

The shooting happened on the 2400 block of West Elkhart Street.

According to officials, 36-year-old Lonnie Rowland was in his prison uniform and preparing for his shift at the time he was killed.

Rowland’s grandmother said she was upstairs when she heard gunshots. She discovered her grandson in the doorway of the home they shared.

Rowland was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prison officials say he had worked at a minimum security facility at 17th and Cambria streets for the last 18 months. He had been a member of the corrections department since 1998.

Police say the shooting remains under investigation.
