Foot Chase Leads to NY Officer's Death

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A police officer who arrested a mall shoplifting suspect after a foot chase in suburban New York has collapsed and died.

Authorities say Michael Perry was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour after arresting the suspect in downtown White Plains on Saturday afternoon. Perry was 43. The cause of death was unknown.

White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong says Perry’s death has shocked the police department to “the very core.” He says it was the first line-of-duty death for the department in 60 years.

Perry was an over seven-year veteran with the White Plains police. He is survived by his wife and 6-year-old twin sons.

Authorities say Perry ran after the 53-year-old suspect after he allegedly stole merchandise from a Macy’s at a downtown mall.

We buried Mike today, It was a good show up by all the surrounding agencies and also guys from Union City NJ I would like to thank all who attended. it was somber to say the least but we gave our brother Mike a good send off. Hardest part of the day was watching his twin sons and wife going through the motions. A police funeral can be very over whelming to a family, there is great support that we extend to our brothers and sisters families in their time of grief but I believe our over whelming presence also makes the day a little harder. I love you Mike and will miss you all the days of my life and may God watch over your two little boys and your wife. God Bless you and yours!!! RIP

As far as the perp you were chasing, if he is found to be guilty of the crime for which you chased him, and an autopsy reveals that the chase resulted in your death, then this a$$hole should be charged with Man- Slaughter.
