Fake Death Report Temporarily Gets Criminal Off the Hook

Associated Press

May 28, 2010

FAIRFAX, Va. – Criminal charges against a Virginia man presumed dead have been revived after his arrest for a separate crime revealed him to be very much alive.

Last year a judge dismissed attempted fraud charges against 38-year-old Rodney T. Newsome Sr. of Manassas after his lawyer submitted papers from Maryland purporting to show Newsome died after unsuccessful brain surgery.

But Newsome’s reprieve was short-lived. He was arrested in February and charged with trying to open a bank account with a stolen check. A court clerk remembered Newsome’s name and alerted prosecutors.

In a court appearance Wednesday in Fairfax, Newsome’s new lawyer said her client was unaware of the bogus death report. The lawyer who submitted the death report, George Freeman, did not return a call seeking comment.

So much for spending all that time and money going to Law School and passing the bar lol. I guess his new job will truly be a jail house lawyer.

What can the "old" lawyer say. . . ."Someone just "pointed" me towards a story in Maryland of where my client had died due to a failed surgery. HONESTLY, I didn't know it was someone else's surgery that failed. I had just seen my client last week and he told me it was true."

Looks like this lawyer might be facing criminal charges of his own. As for the new attorney stating that Newsome "was unaware of the bogus death report".............. I highly doubt that to be the case. It does not pass the "smell test."
