May 12, 2010

OLATHE, KS – Olathe police officers will trade their handcuffs and badges for serving aprons during the annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser Saturday at Red Robin in Olathe.

The event benefits Special Olympics Kansas.

Officers will assist Red Robin employees 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the restaurant, 20155 W. 153rd St., by clearing and cleaning tables and refilling drinks. Officers will solicit “tips” for their efforts. All tips will be donated to Special Olympics Kansas.

Tip-A-Cop is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign. The Torch Run includes an international series of relay runs by thousands of enforcement officers worldwide to help raise money and public awareness for Special Olympics.

The media should take more notice when officers work to make their communities better.

This is one of the great events put on by fellow officers across this great nation and around the world. I participated for twenty years in the LETR helping to raise money and awareness for the Speical Olympic. Raising money for this organization is one way to put a smile on the faces of all involved.

We held a Tip-A-Cop in February and raised about $1,700 for Special Olympics from our small town. I have found it to be a very worthwhile way to volunteer your time.

WOW the only reason why anyone does this is because its PC. If anyone really cared about it then they'd put in effort towards other organizations that need more funding and help. I refuse to contribute anything to Special Olympic jsut because its PC and everyone else is. Big Brother Big Sisters is an example.
