ROSWELL, N.M. —A man accused of wounding three Roswell police officers and killing two other people had been released from jail less than two hours before the early Monday shooting spree, a detention center official said.

Chaves County Detention Center administrator Alfonso Solis said David Vega, 47, was arrested for a petty misdemeanor involving a domestic dispute shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday. Vega paid a $300 bond and was released around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

At about 2 a.m., officers responded to a domestic call at the same house and Vega opened fire on them as he came out of the home.

“It appears that he had planned some sort of ambush,” police spokesman Travis Holley said.

Vega was hit when the officers returned fire, and he was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. His condition was not released.

State police have him in custody at the hospital, Holley said.

The officers’ wounds were “somewhat superficial” and all three are expected to make a full recovery, Holley said. Two were treated at a Roswell hospital and released, while the third remained at the hospital.

When police entered the home after the shooting, they found two dead adults. The victims were not immediately identified, but Holley said it appeared they were related to Vega.

“This investigation is very, very fresh,” Holley said. “We’re withholding all the names involved because it does appear to be a family situation.”

God, not another ambush. At first I thought it was a new detail about the coffee shop shootings of a few months ago. When are these senseless slaughters going to stop? Or, are they? I would say officers who are murdered are the most innocent victims in any case. They're only going according to procedure - they have no vendetta, they have no real interest in whether or not someone is imprisoned, they are foot soldiers representing those that make and uphold the laws.

Personally, I'm fine with bringing myself to his level. I can live with that just fine and won't lose a second of sleep over it. Mercy is for God. I'm human. I hope he rots in pain and agony. F-Ball pos!

*** Not attacking you Phantan74, just giving my opinion. Your post was just a catalyst, that's all.

I think tdmugan76 has the right idea, IF he has a history of this he certainly shouldn't have bonded out. Maybe he will not recover from his wounds saving the State a trial and incarceration monies.

One good reason that at the county I work at noone can bond out on Family Violence arrests until the next day after seeing the JP.

I recently attended a class at Artesia with several officers from roswell and know they are a great group of men and women. I am glad no one was killed or seriously hurt. Keep up the good work, WATCH EACH OTHERS SIX. We in Georgia know of the tragedy of an ambush from this past weekend as we mourn the loss of Rockdale Officer Mahaffey.

Sounds like the ball was dropped. Shoulda put the jackass on a 24 hr. and let him sit before allowing to bond. 20/20 hindsight
