Chicago Police Seize More than 4,000 Weapons

CHICAGO — Chicago police have collected more than 4,000 weapons during a turn-in program that offered cash for guns. Police say they gathered 55 assault weapons, 660 replica weapons, more than 3,300 handguns — and two hand grenades.

Even Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis was shocked by what the department took in. He wondered why anyone would need hand grenades in Chicago.

The gun turn-in was held at 22 locations across the city on Saturday.

Police gave a prepaid credit card for each weapon that was turned in. They gave $100 for each assault weapon, $75 for guns and $10 for BB guns, air guns and replica guns.

Weis said he didn’t know how much would be given for the grenades.

Police say all guns will be destroyed.

I have cash for guns. The only question is how many I can buy before my wife gets angry.

They had the same program out here in Compton over the Christmas holidays.

It was a huge success, even the hardest gang member turned in weapons in exchange for gifts for their kids.

These buy back programs do not work. Most of the people turning them in would not commit crimes in the first place. I would like to see the demographics on this. How many are over 50? How many have 10+ more guns at home? 4000 guns is a drop in the bucket.

Cool, but gun dealers (especially from IN) bring in their junk and scrap guns that are no good and turn them in for the loot lol, so I wonder to what extent that inflates the numbers.
