SEVIER COUNTY, UT – A Sevier County sheriff’s deputy was killed when an out-of-control SUV slid into an accident scene he was investigating on central Utah’s Interstate 70 late Thursday.
Sgt. Franco Aguilar had arrived at the scene of an earlier accident on the Fish Creek Bridge where a Toyota Camry slid on the snowy highway and crashed into a concrete barrier. About 10:30 p.m., as Aguilar was gathering information from the driver, a westbound Chevrolet Suburban lost control and careened into the Toyota.
“At this time we do not know if Sgt. Aguilar was hit and thrown off the [bridge] structure or jumped trying to escape,” the sheriff’s department noted in a statement.

He had reportedly celebrated his 36th birthday earlier Thursday.
Both the driver of the Suburban, identified as 18-year-old Corbin D. Mander of Saratoga Springs, Utah, and the driver of the Camry, identified as Mary D. Harland, 23, of Frisco, Colo., sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Sevier Valley Medical Center in Richfield where they were treated and later released.
No citations were issued, but the accidents remained under investigation Friday.
