PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, MD – An attempt to stop the driver of a car in Prince William on suspicion of driving under the influence led to a chase and the arrest of two Virginia men who were charged with the possession of drugs and a stolen handgun, county police said.
An officer tried to stop a Chevy Tahoe in Woodbridge around 11:37 a.m. on April 21, a county press release said. Instead of stopping, police said, the driver continued on. After a chase, the driver hit a recreation center and both the driver and a passenger fled on foot and were caught, police said.
Police searched the Tahoe, finding drugs and a handgun that was reported stolen in Stafford, authorities said.
The alleged driver, Troy S. Kelly, 29, of Stafford, was charged with driving under the influence, eluding police, hit and run, possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and other charges.
The alleged passenger, Troy D. Pettiway, 32, of Dale City, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and other charges.
Both men were held without bond pending a June 1 court date, police said. The recreation center took more than $10,000 in damages, police said, but was deemed safe by a building inspector.
