SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco police say an officer opened fire Monday on a woman who tried to run him down with her car after she smashed into several other vehicles.
Police spokesman Officer Samson Chan said the plainclothes officer had no choice but to shoot the driver Monday afternoon when she ignored an order to stop and tried to ram him.
The driver was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the upper torso. She was expected to survive.
“She was basically using her car as a weapon,” Chan said.
The encounter happened while police were responding to reports that someone was driving erratically in the city’s South of Market neighborhood.
Chan says the woman crashed her car into five other vehicles on the street in the moments before the shooting.
Police said the driver of one car struck by the woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have not released the name of the shooting victim or the police officer. The officer was placed on routine paid administrative leave while the incident was investigated.
