ST. CLOUD, MN – St. Cloud police officer Matt Gannon was mere seconds away from the end of his Sunday morning shift and on his way home when he happened upon a burning house.

“I got out of my squad car and started pounding on doors, trying to get people out of there,” Gannon said. Thanks to his action, two adults and three children escaped the burning house without injury.

Investigators said the fire, which Gannon spotted about 4:40 a.m., probably originated in the living room fireplace. Damage is estimated at $50,000 to the home itself and $15,000 to property inside.
