SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Police Chief George Gascon today apologized for remarks he made Thursday on the threat of terrorism that drew criticism from members of the city’s Middle Eastern community.

Gascon spoke at a breakfast at San Francisco’s Ferry Building before construction and trade groups, at which he discussed a $412 million June 8 bond measure to build a new police headquarters and implement other seismic upgrades citywide.

According to Gascon, he also discussed possible terrorist threats to the headquarters at the Hall of Justice as another reason to support the measure. He said he mentioned domestic terrorism but also the threat of international terrorism from Yemen and Afghanistan, and also noted significant populations from those countries residing in the Bay Area.

Today, his office issued a statement apologizing “to those in the Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities who were offended by his comments yesterday.”

“Chief Gascon did not intend to upset the community and he is mindful of the importance of cultural sensitivity, not only here in San Francisco, but nationally,” the statement read.

The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American Islamic Relations said today that it, along with other local Arab and Muslim groups, sent a letter to Gascon in which they expressed disappointment.

The organization said they have asked the police chief to meet with leaders from the Arab and Muslim community in San Francisco to talk about possible negative impacts of his comments.

No one would ever question or doubt Islam if they would have stood en-mass to cry with us after the deaths of almost 3,000 civilians in their God's name.

The Chief did not say anything that would lead a reasonable person to feel threatened. The terrorists he referred to do not live in his jurisdiction. The apology was not a good move.

He was talking about the terrorists, not the general middle east population in this country I don,t recall the middle eastern population apologizing for the terrorists. We in this country have to stop catering to the politically correct morons in this country.

This PC crap makes me sick!!! He mentioned domestic terrorism as well as terrorists from the middle east. I don't see the problem. Maybe if there had been something from another area of the world in recent years, it would be different, but I haven't heard anything about the IRA in years.

He's a chief, and should know better. He has to be PC to the hilt.

I feel more sorry for the Chief than anyone else, that he had to waste his time with unnecessary apologies and public statements. Please people. Even the folks in America from Yemen or Afghanistan should be opposed to terrorism (even from their "home" countries) unless they are part of the problem! No apology should be needed. Political correctness is a waste of time these days.

If thses middle eastern folks are upset, then they should do something about the problem, not remain the "silent majority". There are terrorists among them recruiting and training. Expose them!

All right that was the rhetorical radical side of me:) The political side says the chief could have said the same thing with just as much truthfullness using a better intellectual choice of words.

Nothing ever goes un-noticed in America when someone in authority states a truth swallow your what ever it is National pride and realize if your living in the United States You are firstly an American!
Chief Gascon re-write what ever you said trim the fat and slap that meat on the grill and fire it up sir. I'm not Irish American, I'm an American with Irish heritage. Start thinking in the realm of being American- with Arab heritage or American- with Muslim heritage. Or what ever your specific "Title is." Think about the first nations people of this great land they are " American Indians." Dang it man, where you live is what you live. Let me go to the middle East and start wimpering about how anti-western Arab/Muslim authority is towards my Irish beliefs and see if I don't end up deported or jailed! Sorry for the rant .....Chief, don't back down dude.
