2012 Police Interceptor Unveiled by Ford

Ford’s new police car can endure a rear-end crash at 75 m.p.h., easily jump curbs and accelerate twice as fast as Ford’s outgoing iconic Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
“We hope that you will agree that Ford has succeeded in delivering the ultimate new police interceptor,” Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas, said as he introduced the new car to a group of law enforcement officials in Las Vegas on Friday.
The new car even comes with “stab plates” to protect the driver and front-seat passenger. Police departments can order optional ballistic door panels.
“So you can see this is not a civilian product by any means,” Fields said.
The new Interceptor will be built on the same structure as the Ford Taurus sedan at the company’s Chicago assembly plant after production of the Crown Victoria ends in late 2011 at Ford’s St. Thomas, Ontario, plant, which is to close.
Ford also said it is developing a new SUV-based police vehicle. Ford said it will provide additional details about that vehicle by the end of September.
Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of U.S. sales and marketing, said Ford expects to maintain its market share in the police vehicle business even though competition is increasing.
Introduced in 1983, the Crown Victoria has long dominated police car sales and accounts for about 75% of the police car market with annual sales of 40,000 to 50,000.

Note: I'm kind of a car nut...
Some of you mentioned that the Taurus is cramped. This is built on the new platform. The old rent-a-car Taurus was retired a few years back. The new one is on a full size frame. This appears to be based on the Taurus SHO, which is a phenomenal car. I'm not sure if the police version will have it but, the SHO has AWD (I never got why people use RWD in snowy places) and 0-60 in about 5 seconds, with some pretty slick handling.
This is a perfect platform to replace the 1970s technology in the Crown Vic. This is durable, fast, big, and has a lot of flexibility for a lot of applications. They say it drives with as good or better performance than a $50k BMW.

They look sharp. However, looks don't get the job done. What's the cost going to be? Should be a better price than the Crown Vic, but I bet it's not! It's a Taurus for pete's sake! That's fine if you're undercover or a detective who doesn't have all the gear. What about rear seat space for someone you're taking to jail. Not that I really care about the person I'm jailing, but when you are dealing with a larger person, how are you going to get them in and out?

I am not happy with the crown Vic leaving the scene, and the Taurus taking it over. I had a Taurus and noticed how cramped it was without a cage, a computer, and a console in it. All i can say with all that in there is CRAMPED! Bad move on fords part. Safety features like stab proof seats? What the hell do you need those for if you have a cage which 99 % of them will have installed? Waste on money.

Sounds great except for its friggin smaller. Put all that whiz bang stuff in a vehicle the size of a Crown Vic or Charger instead of a Taurus or Impala.

Yes. Stick with the Ford (or Carbon Motors). After GM trying to pass off the cramped Impala and Chrysler passing off the even more cramped Intrepid as police vehicles, they should be banned from ever bidding again. It looks so unprofessional to have to pop the hood of your patrol vehicle while working a wreck in the summer to keep your Intrepid or Impala from overheating. Couple this with the bailouts GM and Chrysler received, my loyalties are not with them. Sad to see the Crown Vic go, but it looks like at least Carbon Motors and the new Ford may be worthy replacements.
