Man Gets Life for Slaying of Officer

Man Gets Life for Slaying of Officer

James Heang and Robert Iacoviello Jr. in Suffolk Superior Court

Boston Globe via YellowBrix

February 06, 2010

REVERE – Robert Iacoviello Jr. was sentenced today to life in prison for the murder of off-duty Revere police Officer Daniel Talbot, who was shot to death after a chance encounter led to an exchange of words and gunfire between a group of alleged gang members and drunken police officers in 2007.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Patrick Brady imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years on Iacoviello after hearing tearful expressions of anger and sorrow from Talbot’s fiancee, Constance Bethell, and his relatives.

Talbot’s mother, Patty, looked directly at Iacoviello as she delivered her victim impact statement in court today.

“Because of your actions, I don’t have my son any more,‘’ she said in a hard, clear voice. "Gangs and guns don’t belong in America.‘’

Patty Talbot said she was with her son when he died at a Boston hospital. "I held his hand, kissed him, and told him I loved him,’’ she said.

Bethell, who was with her fiancee at the high school when he was shot, said she is wracked by guilt for not having prevented Talbot from going to the high school.

Bethell said she cannot forget what she saw on the morning of Sept. 29, 2007, including the sight of Talbot "dying before my eyes and I could do nothing to save him.’’

Iacoviello was convicted of second-degree murder. His co-defendant, James Heang, was convicted of being an accessory after the fact for helping to dismantle the handgun used to shoot Talbot. He was sentenced to serve up to six years in state prison.

Talbot and fellow Revere officers William Soto and Evan Franklin participated in firearms training and then spent the rest of the night and early morning drinking at restaurants before continuing to party on bleachers behind Revere High School.

Around 1 a.m., Derek Lodie, an alleged gang member, walked near the bleachers, leading Talbot to launch a taunting tirade that included language likely to incite gang members, witnesses testified. Talbot was a member of the department’s gang unit.

Lodie, who admitted his role and is serving an 8- to 12-year sentence, summoned Iacoviello, who was convicted of shooting Talbot.

"The sad part is that these two will be treated as heros while in prison as they "offed a cop" Like Henry said, they will have good food, a nice clean place to live with many perks that the average citizen doesn't even have like a gym, cable, free health care, etc. They will hone their 'skills' in prison and continue their gang activities and eventually be released back on the streets even more dangerous! I don't even like letal injection for cop killers, they should get the electric chair, it looks like that hurts which is fine with me!"

You dumb shit. They will be butt fucked in prison, because of you stupid drunken cops bumping your gums. Society is suppose to look up to you, but they don't because you are without honor.

    "Should have got death"

You fucking stupid cocksucker. For every 1,000 civilians that are sentenced to death for killing a cop, only one cop is fired from his job for murdering a civilian

"I can't understand why our lawmakers cannot pass a law making it an automatic death sentence for killing any LEO period. That just shows how much the people we have voted into office care about our nations other soldiers that fight a neverending war with rules that favor criminals."

Really? I can't understand why our lawmakers cannot pass a law making it an automatic death sentence for any LEO killing a civilian that is clearly unarmed period. That just shows how much the people we have voted into office care about our LEO's murdering unarmed civilians with absolutely no recourse..

I just read the entire 'article'! My God, the jury didn't seem too upset by the murder but were "Shocked by the Officers behaviour"! I try not to cuss that much but you do not want to hear what I said when I read that! The most severe sentence was 2nd degree murder? The others were given fairly light sentences! What a disgrace!

mmarchesi , your assessment of our "ELECTED OFFICIALS" neglecting the Law Enforcement Community is 100% on the money. The only thing "ELECTED OFFICIALS" care about is first off money in there pockets , and second to get re-elected. This past Special Election in Massachusetts should have been a wake up call to all Politicians that the "Sleeping Giant" has been awakened. The silent majority is no longer silent , we as the People are the Employer of them the Elected Officials need to resurrect HR3153 from 2007 . "NO MORE POLITICALLY CORRECT MAMBY PAMBY HAND HOLDING FOR COP KILLERS" !
