DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines police officer has been arrested on charges that he tried to sexually assault a woman while on duty.

Officer Maynard Richardson has been charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and nonfelonius conduct.

Richardson, who has served in the department for two years, is accused of trying to sexually assault a 19-year-old woman early Friday while he was in uniform and in his patrol car.

Police Chief Judy Bradshaw says the woman was not harmed. The woman called police about 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The 35-year-old Richardson has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Bradshaw says Richardson was suspended for two days last year after being involved in inappropriate conduct involving a citizen.
