Homeless Couple Steals Sheriff's Patrol Car
Detroit Free Press via YellowBrix
January 21, 2010
A Washtenaw County pair is in jail today after stealing a Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office patrol car Wednesday.
A sheriff’s office deputy was at a home in the 100 block of Chestnut Boulevard in Scio Township at 5 p.m., responding to a fight involving the living arrangements of two family members, according to a statement released by the department.
The deputy put two people in the back seat of his patrol car to take them to the Delonis Homeless Shelter in Ann Arbor City. But at 5:45 p.m., the deputy radioed to dispatchers that his patrol vehicle had been stolen. Investigators found the patrol car a short time later, arrested the pair and took them to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The only part missing from this is what happened between he was taking them from to the shelter, to when the car was stolen! Fine work none theless from the Sheriffs office. But i will agree the car should have been locked AT ALL GIVIN TIMES! Yeah free living at the tax payers expens!!!!!! This Deputy should have learned a valuable lesson from this!

If he did not lock the car upon getting out, he should expect that to happen sooner or later. The only time I do not lock my veh is on traffic stop. Every where else, locked as I get out. Even at home for lunch or a break.

Maybe this is not funny. But thats funny as hell. Haha poor guys either never gonna live that one down or have a cool story to tell the family. Imagine that, someone asks you if you've ever had your Police car stolen... and you have to answer Yes.

That's unfortunate, the officer is definitely going to hear about this forever. But glad to hear that they got the two people and no one got hurt.

We have a cage in all our units and when we get out of our unit at any time we have to remove the key and lock the doors.
We have never had a unit stolen.

First off he was on a call at a home, he was not at his home. Now I don't about Washtenaw sheriff"s cars but for my department it is mandatory that if some one is in the back seat that the body shield partition be secured, we also have a security feature in our cars that anytime we get out of our cars a lock engages that requires us to press a hidden unlock button a certain way to get it to unlock the cars transmission lever allowing us to put it in gear.

I can't really see how the officer did anything wrong. He was trying to defuse a delicate situation without undue force. Just where did these knuckle draggers think they were going in a sheriff's car?? I really hate to pass judgement on people, but it looks to me like these "homeless people" were moochers!!???

I don't think you could pick a worse vehicle to steal. Not to hard to find it with all the emblems and numbers on it.
