LAKE WALES, Fla. – A Lakeland police officer working an off-duty detail died in a vehicle crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 56-year-old Officer Charlie Dallas was driving out of Lake Wales Monday afternoon when a driver in the oncoming lane swerved into Dallas’ lane and smashed into his sport utility vehicle’s side. The impact reportedly caused Dallas to lose control and flip the SUV. Dallas was thrown from the vehicle and later declared dead at the scene.

At the time of the crash, Dallas had been working an off-duty detail for Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Dallas’ passenger, 33-year-old Karyn Spencer, was hospitalized with unknown injuries. Dallas and Spencer were returning from a patient transfer.

No other injuries were reported. FHP says charges are pending.
