Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

“Most regrettably, a nearby 2-year-old child was hit by some of the pepper spray,” said Hill, adding that the Phoenix Fire Department was called to the scene to treat the girl. “I am told she was released and was expected to be OK.”

No one else was seriously injured, he said.

Phoenix police said Saturday night that five people were arrested during the protest and taken to Maricopa County Jail. Four were booked on suspicion of aggravated assault on police. The other faces disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Though the scene of the disturbance was cleared within minutes, the aftermath was chaotic. Protesters yelled obscenities at police officers in riot gear. One officer shook his pepper spray canister as he ordered people to keep moving. One protester wore goggles, and several others wrapped bandanas around their mouths.

Critics have accused deputies working in Arpaio’s immigration efforts of racial profiling, which the sheriff denies. He says his deputies approach people when they have probable cause to believe they had committed crimes.

Ten months ago, Arpaio learned he was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for alleged discrimination and unconstitutional searches. He says the investigation was prompted by his immigration efforts, although federal authorities haven’t provided details.

Since early 2008, Arpaio has run 13 immigration and crimes sweeps involving officers who flood a section of a city – in some cases heavily Latino areas – to seek out traffic violators and arrest other violators.

Arpaio’s power to make federal immigration arrests was stripped away three months ago by officials in Washington, but he continues his immigration efforts through the enforcement of two state laws.

A federal grand jury also is investigating Arpaio and his office on allegations of abusing his powers.

Dont kid yourselves thinking this administration is going to side with Sheriff Joe, the county or the state of AZ. Just as they have sympathy or the muslims plight they will also for the illegal, the criminal and terrorist and fully believe they get constitutional rights when on our soil.....We're in so deep will we ever get out? At least Ted Kennedy's seat is no longer a democrat and will break the majority in the house.

How can someone come here illegally, break our laws and then DEMAND rights ? It's like upside down world. I'm Cuban so it's not like I'm against latin people. You ought to see how the Mexicans treat the people who cross their country trying to get to the U.S. . They're robbed, killed, enslaved, raped and all manner of horrors. They can forget going to the Mexican police too, they'll just brutalize them some more. Yet these same Mexicans have the nerve to come here illegally and demand more rights than they have in their own country. Pretty nervy. I can understand that people want better lives, they need to put their energy into making their own country a better place to live. We could use a better system too though, for people who come here to work, let them work with some kind of papers and permission to be here. Make sure that they get paid at least minimum wage and make sure that they pay U.S. taxes too. But this craziness of just invading the U.S. like they do has got to stop. Try doing that in any other country and see where you end up.

I don't know if Sheriff Joe is on solid ground with his actions. However, I hope he takes his safety seriously and protects himself until all of this this is settled. Hope he wears a b/proof vest when out in public. p.s. Where has Americafirst been? Washington has known about Joe for years. Charlie Garris

America has been so divided and weakened!! Possible to the point were we may not recover!!! 30 or more years ago, if this happened, another Alamo would have occured!!! Americans would not stand for citizens of another country taking over our country. Mexicans are multiplying at such an alarming rate at our county hospitals. Now, they have a large influence in our voting booths, they are for their own race and not of the future and wellbeing of the United States!! True patriotism appears to be fading in our country, it is very depressing to see this!!!! The Fed Govt displays a very Anti-American attitude!!!!!!! It has been said that our county will collapse in 25 years if we continue on the course we are on. We need more true Americans like Sheriff Joe, especially in the Fed Govt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brother, are you sure you read that right? I took that "Who would Jesus deport" not as Jesus Christ but as Jesus (Hey-Zeus) the guy running the portable burrito stand. A rather abstract statement on a T-shirt. My answer, depends if he has a green card!

Years ago, when I first read about Joe, I was acually so impressed I wanted to hug the man. We need more men like Joe to stand up and do what he was hired to do. They ought to do a survey of the prisoners he has taken care of. One said, he was a better man because of Sheriff Joe. Well, if that is the case, then what is the problem? Leave the man alone and let him do his job. I am a big support of him and want more men like him. I wish they had classes that could be taught by HIM to get some of these law enforcement to stand up and be the man and women we elect them to be!

Screw illegals, they have no rights and I belive the federal gov is in violating the federal law by not persueing illegals and getting them out of this country. Theres people that have been waiting along time to come to this country legally and its just a slamp in their face when they see nothing beeing done to these money sucking burdins on tax payers getting away with breaking the law. I say get caught once get deported get caught twice death penalty.

This is the first time that I heard that Washington has leaned on Arpaio. It figures. Marxist don't like law enforces but their own. But Washington got a big notice yesterday from the voters in Mass. And there is more of the same coming soon.

The major problem here is that illegals do tend to get better treatment. They get sent to prison and then are deported to wherever they came from be it Mexico or Ireland afterwhich they come right back into the country to continue committing crimes. Many others simply go the route of legally becoming a US citizen. There's no reason to sneak in unless you have refugee status. Law makers and politicians time and time again completely ignore the laws we have now for their own agendas. Unless there was some sort of illegal and inappropriate action taken as opposed to arresting criminals who just happen to be illegals in the south then why strip his arrest powers? Perhaps a little reverse suing would come in handy. If all of us on the blue line banded together and started counter suing for some of the BS that's rained down upon us - well just imagine the about facing from our local politicians that would occur.
