Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

January 18, 2010

PHOENIX, AZ – Thousands of immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn’t handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.

The three-mile walk that started in a west Phoenix park ended by afternoon at the Durango Jail Complex, a collection of five jails, where officials played music, including a record by singer Linda Ronstadt, to drown out noise made by protesters. Ronstadt took part in Saturday’s protest.

More Sheriff Joe...

Protesters chanted “Joe must go” as they approached the jail complex. One person carried a sign that said “We are human” and bore a picture of a lawman with a wolf’s face. A family of five wore T-shirts saying “Who would Jesus deport?”

For his part, Arpaio said he wasn’t bothered by the protesters and that they should be directing their frustrations at Congress because it has the power to change America’s immigration laws.

“They are zeroing in on the wrong guy,” Arpaio said. “They ought to be zeroing in on the president.”

The demonstration was peaceful until police say protesters near the end of the procession started throwing water bottles at officers. Phoenix Police Lt. Pat Hofmann said officers used pepper spray as they tried to separate protesters from an officer who was trying to take away the bottles.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said on-scene supervisors described a group of demonstrators purposefully disrupting the demonstration by assaulting several police officers and a police horse.

He said one demonstrator struck a police sergeant on the head and chest with a flagpole. Two others threw water bottles, possibly containing rocks, at other officers, but missed.

Hill also said a police officer on horseback was assaulted while her horse was mobbed, punched and pushed. The officer used pepper spray to stop the assault.

Let's not confuse immigration with illegal entry. Someone, regardless of what their nationality is, who enters the United States illegally is not an immigrant. Immagrants enter the United States legally. Illegal immagrants do just as the name implies, enter the United States illegally. The illegal part of the two words intones a note of "you broke the law by comming into the United States ILLEGALLY." The fact that you "BROKE THE LAW," makes you subject to arrest. If we are going to go soft on someone "BREAKING THE LAW" by comming into the United States ILLEGALLY, are we going to go soft on child pornographers, drunk drivers that injure or kill other people, theives, rapists, shoplifters, etc., etc., etc.. You break the law, you are subject to arrest, plain and simple. Now the penalty for what ever law you broke should be appropriate for the severity of the crime. In the case of ILLEGALLY ENTERING the United States, the penalty, appropriatelty, should be DEPORTATION!!!!! So, as Sheriff Joe has pointed out, don't single him out for upholding the laws that our attorney lawmakers have put on the "books," go protest the attorney lawmakers. Sheriff Joe is doing an exceptional job of performing the task that he SWORE to do, and that is UPHOLD THE LAW!!!!! Thanks for your hard work and bravery to stand in the face of liberal whiners that only want you to uphold the laws they think are appropriate, and do not affect their agenda.

They can't respect our laws and way of life and yet they demand the same benefits. If they want to become a citizen then sign up for 4 years and serve in Iraq or Afghanistan for their citizenship, if not then go back to your own country.

while for the most part I don't care for sheriff's (they are elected officials and I don't like politicians as a rule), there are a few out there, I fully support and Joe is one of them.
watch your 6 sheriff and keep up the good work.

I am a PROUD American and my country comes first......long before the rights of a bunch of people who violated the law coming here in the first place. Like many of you, my family members also came here from Spain many years ago and followed the laws and fulfilled the req.'s set forth by the American gov't. It has been my experience with protesters in my city, they aren’t fighting for citizenship. They are fighting to remain here illegally without fulfilling their obligations, such as paying taxes, learning the language and becoming a citizen legally. I support chasing immigrants, regardless of their country of origin, and deporting them. Enough is enough...the ACLU and other worthless organizations need to acknowledge the laws, including the ones for harboring felons!

First let me state I am a Hispanic. Now let me say deport the illegals NOW. Allowing them to stay is stupid. My family immigrated a couple of hundred years ago from Spain. We have fought and died in all of the US wars and we are citizens who support our great country. It is " Viva America" NOT viva La Raza. Joe Arpaio should be president or at least governor. Down with oBUMa and his commie administration.

i say if you have a green card and pay taxes in my country and speek english than welcome home brother. if your answer to any of those is no than go back to where youre from and fix your country before you try to screw around in mine.i lived in arizona for thirteen years before i couldnt take it any more. i worked retail and had to deal with people every day who spoke no english at all and had ebt (food stamp) cards and drivers licenses and pockets full of big bills$. i say we put sherrif joe in to run in the next election and then let him march like general patton til the problem is resolved.
