Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

PHOENIX, AZ – Thousands of immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.
Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn’t handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.
The three-mile walk that started in a west Phoenix park ended by afternoon at the Durango Jail Complex, a collection of five jails, where officials played music, including a record by singer Linda Ronstadt, to drown out noise made by protesters. Ronstadt took part in Saturday’s protest.
Protesters chanted “Joe must go” as they approached the jail complex. One person carried a sign that said “We are human” and bore a picture of a lawman with a wolf’s face. A family of five wore T-shirts saying “Who would Jesus deport?”
For his part, Arpaio said he wasn’t bothered by the protesters and that they should be directing their frustrations at Congress because it has the power to change America’s immigration laws.
“They are zeroing in on the wrong guy,” Arpaio said. “They ought to be zeroing in on the president.”
The demonstration was peaceful until police say protesters near the end of the procession started throwing water bottles at officers. Phoenix Police Lt. Pat Hofmann said officers used pepper spray as they tried to separate protesters from an officer who was trying to take away the bottles.
Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said on-scene supervisors described a group of demonstrators purposefully disrupting the demonstration by assaulting several police officers and a police horse.
He said one demonstrator struck a police sergeant on the head and chest with a flagpole. Two others threw water bottles, possibly containing rocks, at other officers, but missed.
Hill also said a police officer on horseback was assaulted while her horse was mobbed, punched and pushed. The officer used pepper spray to stop the assault.

Joe is the man and imho always will be the man, the pukes in az need to realize this is America, not mexico. And for that two year old kid, it is unfortunate that its parents put it in a position of being hurt in such a protest. The blame is there's and there's alone.

Pretty sure there are a few ways to do it legally...

My grandpa was part of the group that made sure Fort Collins wasn't a "home-base" zone for illegal immigrants. And, I think that a hard worker is the same anywhere, but I can see some lazy-ass waving the "I'm a moron" flag and earn 500 bucks a month kissing ass.
We can't throw a bone, nor can we build a wall when others are pickings holes in it.
This is me being opinionated without any cornerstone, but $50 says knocking out support for snorting crack in both countries and shooting the fool asses who want this will help immensely.
What do you guys think?

"meinekebob" I agree 100% and some..!!
As I stated in earlier posts on this article, I think that Sheriff Arpaio is a fine example for all of those that are tasked with the seemingly never ending battle against illegal entry into our Homeland...

I would love to see someone like Joe in California. Our economy is being depleted by people in this country illegaly. Education, Housing, Medicare, Welfare ... our economic problems exist because of the stress of providing for everyone that isn't or hasn't paid into the system. But..... lets open the doors and let everyone in and not have them pay into our "social slush fund" Great idea.

Dad8: I seriously doubt you are in law enforcement, if you were you would see the damage illegals do to communities in the United States. From your posts I would guess you are a security guard at the ACLU and part time for La Raza. You are the minority here. Why do you think Sheriff Joe is always re-elected? Let me clue you in, the majority supports his actions. Illegals don't give a crap about this country, but I do. People can protest all they want against Sheriff Joe, but it's all for a lost cause. Maybe they should spend more time being productive citizens, instead of protesting against a law enforcer, who last time I checked, doesn't make law.

i think its up to homeland security to worry about illegal alien's. i do agree with everyone however, illegal's shouldn't be in our country. i just don't think a sheriff should be taking on immigration related problems. the only thing that makes me mad about this is the fact the protesters were assaulting or using force against police officers. lets be realistic, there is a better chance of solving problems peacefully. i also think is idiot protesters should of opened there eye's and realized that the good old sheriff was already under investigation.
p.s. god bless the USA

Why don't these immigrants go protest in their own country. What don't they understand about ILLEGAL. Wish we had a hundred sheriff Joes . I am getting real sick and tired of these immigrants coming to another country and telling us how we should live. Assaulting our police officers. In Mexico they would have shot them.

If you don't support Sheriff Joe your part of the problem, what part of ILLEGAL immigrant(s) is so hard to understand? If you can enter LEGALLY - Welcome to the US.

I love Sheriff Joe, I think he does great work. It really makes it look worse for the protesters then helps anything, to cause problems with LEOs and break laws themselves.
I don't believe that learning a second language is bad, however I should not have to embrace someone else's culture because they can't embrace the native culture. And I agree, for the most part illegals cause more problems and cost more money then they do help. I'm with Sheriff Joe.

Hey Dad8,
I agree it's okay to speak Languages other than English. All three of my kids can speak other languages but English is the language of this land and I don't want my tax dollars spent printing material for those who come here and won't learn our language. I was born here so I'm as American as any indian and more so than any other person not born in this country. I think certain people just latch on and label others racist, biggoted or whatever because soon as there is reference to another group or race they stop thinking right at that point and just blindly attack the other person. I don't have one thing against another race but I do have a problem with a person who won't follow the laws we have in place to live in this country. Most of us on this site are sworn to uphold the constitution and force those who don't to face a judge and that is why you may find a lot of resistance to those that are not here legally. Take a few deep breaths and try looking at this issue from a different point of view.
