Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

PHOENIX, AZ – Thousands of immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn’t handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.

The three-mile walk that started in a west Phoenix park ended by afternoon at the Durango Jail Complex, a collection of five jails, where officials played music, including a record by singer Linda Ronstadt, to drown out noise made by protesters. Ronstadt took part in Saturday’s protest.

More Sheriff Joe...

Protesters chanted “Joe must go” as they approached the jail complex. One person carried a sign that said “We are human” and bore a picture of a lawman with a wolf’s face. A family of five wore T-shirts saying “Who would Jesus deport?”

For his part, Arpaio said he wasn’t bothered by the protesters and that they should be directing their frustrations at Congress because it has the power to change America’s immigration laws.

“They are zeroing in on the wrong guy,” Arpaio said. “They ought to be zeroing in on the president.”

The demonstration was peaceful until police say protesters near the end of the procession started throwing water bottles at officers. Phoenix Police Lt. Pat Hofmann said officers used pepper spray as they tried to separate protesters from an officer who was trying to take away the bottles.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said on-scene supervisors described a group of demonstrators purposefully disrupting the demonstration by assaulting several police officers and a police horse.

He said one demonstrator struck a police sergeant on the head and chest with a flagpole. Two others threw water bottles, possibly containing rocks, at other officers, but missed.

Hill also said a police officer on horseback was assaulted while her horse was mobbed, punched and pushed. The officer used pepper spray to stop the assault.

You people that support this neo Nazi peace of crap really don't understand. He is not a friend of law enforcement and not a friend of the Union of law enforcement. This I know first hand. let's put the imigration debate aside for a moment. He has hurt many officers besides trying to grab me with his long arm of the law. By the way it did not work cause he is a dumb guy. But he went after a K-9 Officer in Chandler Az.. And made a big show of it. He went after a Phx Police Officer just for show once again and lost that one. He want's to make a show of it. But the fact's are. Crime in the unincoorperated areas that he swore to protect has gone way up. Cause he is so busy fooling you fools that he is not doing his job as a sheriff. See thru the hype man. This guy is no true Sheriff.

Hey Dad8, you are so full of crap they can smell it up on the international space station. Truth? You would not know the truth if it bit you in the $%@.
For starters, lets talk truth. Historical truth. Lets start with Texas. You stated it belonged to Mexico? You must have been asleep in class the day they covered history. How about the period before the 1500's when the indians lived in the area of what we call Texas today. Indians such as the Apache, Atakapan, Caddo, Comanche, Cherokee, Choctaw, Karankawa, Kickapoo, Kiowa and others. These were the first residents. Then the Spanish arrived around 1519 and 1528 but did little until 1685 when the Spanish settled the colony of Fort Saint Louis at Matagorda Bay which lasted a mere 4 years due to hostile natives. In an attempt to beat out the French, Spain started to build missions and in 1718 San Antonio became the first Spanish settlement in Texas. The treaty in 1749 between Spain and the Lipan Apache Nation led to war with other tribes. The treaty between Spain and the Comanche Nation in 1785 led to the defeat of the waring indian tribes and the eventual peaceful conversion of most indian tribes to cristianity by the end of the 1700's. In 1821 the Mexican War of Independence included the territory of Texas and she became part of Mexico. The population of Texas grew from 3,500 in 1825 to 37,800 in 1834. In 1830 enforcement of customs duties angered all mexicans and the first open revolts of the government began. Texans (mexican citizens) held a convention in 1832 and again in 1833 to discuss the future as well as independence. Federalists and Centralists of Mexico continued to clash. Unrest developed into armed conflict in late 1835 which resulted in the Texas Revolution. You may remember the Alamo (a thirteen day battle). Texans signed a Declaration of Independence in 1836 forming the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston led the Texas Army and defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto forcing Santa Anna to sign the Treaties of Velasco. Continued unrest and armed conflicts led the Repulic of Texas to petition for annexation into the United States which was finally accepted in 1845. When Texas was annexed, Mexico broke diplomatic relations with the US. Mexican troops attacked a US Calvary patrol and the Mexican-American War began. A series of US victories led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the 2 year war in 1848. The US was given undisputed control of Texas for $18,250,000. The current boundries of Texas were established in the compromise of 1850. A Texas State Convention considered secession from the United States on January 28, 1861 and adopted an Ordinance of Secession on February 1, 1861. Texas voters approved the Ordinance on February 23, 1861 and Texas joined the Confeterate States of America, ratifying the permanent Confederate States Constitution on March 23, 1861. With the defeat of the Confederacy, Texas became occupied by the Union Army. It was not until 1870 that Texas was readmitted into the Union. Have you ever heard of the term "six flags over Texas"? The Flags of Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, Confederate States of America and the United States of America have all flown over Texas as the sovereign colors of Texas. Now that is the FACTUAL TRUTH about texas. When you are done absorbing it, let me know and we will review the next Sate west of Texas, New Mexico. So you work in law enforcement? Why don't you post your info? Or maybe you do not want anyone to find out you are a phoney. Even a rookie knows to get all the facts before opening the mouth or taking action. You did both without the facts. Maybe you should go back to school and learn history before you spit out all that liberal garbage that was oozed into your head by some arrogant ignorant liberal mentor. I think you said I can't handle the truth? I handle the truth and facts quite well. Too bad you are so ignorant of the facts. And no, I do not own the internet but I paid my dues as a cop and that gives me the right along with my brother and sister officers to claim this site as my (our) site and to challenge a phoney skell like you. Let me know when you want me to resume with the history lesson. Better yet, like I said, post your info or crawl back under whatever liberal rock you came from and spew your ignorant liberal crap there.

Joe is the man and imho always will be the man, the pukes in az need to realize this is America, not mexico. And for that two year old kid, it is unfortunate that its parents put it in a position of being hurt in such a protest. The blame is there's and there's alone.

"need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally."

Pretty sure there are a few ways to do it legally...

My grandpa was part of the group that made sure Fort Collins wasn't a "home-base" zone for illegal immigrants. And, I think that a hard worker is the same anywhere, but I can see some lazy-ass waving the "I'm a moron" flag and earn 500 bucks a month kissing ass.

We can't throw a bone, nor can we build a wall when others are pickings holes in it.
This is me being opinionated without any cornerstone, but $50 says knocking out support for snorting crack in both countries and shooting the fool asses who want this will help immensely.

    What do you guys think?

"meinekebob" I agree 100% and some..!!

As I stated in earlier posts on this article, I think that Sheriff Arpaio is a fine example for all of those that are tasked with the seemingly never ending battle against illegal entry into our Homeland...

I would love to see someone like Joe in California. Our economy is being depleted by people in this country illegaly. Education, Housing, Medicare, Welfare ... our economic problems exist because of the stress of providing for everyone that isn't or hasn't paid into the system. But..... lets open the doors and let everyone in and not have them pay into our "social slush fund" Great idea.

Dad8: I seriously doubt you are in law enforcement, if you were you would see the damage illegals do to communities in the United States. From your posts I would guess you are a security guard at the ACLU and part time for La Raza. You are the minority here. Why do you think Sheriff Joe is always re-elected? Let me clue you in, the majority supports his actions. Illegals don't give a crap about this country, but I do. People can protest all they want against Sheriff Joe, but it's all for a lost cause. Maybe they should spend more time being productive citizens, instead of protesting against a law enforcer, who last time I checked, doesn't make law.

Sheriff Joe is an awesome guy! He keeps getting re-elected so the AMERICAN people who are LEGALLY here must think he's doing a fine job. He's the ONLY law enforcement officer with the balls to do his job...what part of ILLEGAL do you people not undertand??!! Go get 'em Sheriff Joe!!! Send all the illegals back...there are alot of us who don't want them here.

i think its up to homeland security to worry about illegal alien's. i do agree with everyone however, illegal's shouldn't be in our country. i just don't think a sheriff should be taking on immigration related problems. the only thing that makes me mad about this is the fact the protesters were assaulting or using force against police officers. lets be realistic, there is a better chance of solving problems peacefully. i also think is idiot protesters should of opened there eye's and realized that the good old sheriff was already under investigation.
    p.s. god bless the USA

Why don't these immigrants go protest in their own country. What don't they understand about ILLEGAL. Wish we had a hundred sheriff Joes . I am getting real sick and tired of these immigrants coming to another country and telling us how we should live. Assaulting our police officers. In Mexico they would have shot them.

If you don't support Sheriff Joe your part of the problem, what part of ILLEGAL immigrant(s) is so hard to understand? If you can enter LEGALLY - Welcome to the US.
