Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

The AP via YellowBrix

January 18, 2010

“Most regrettably, a nearby 2-year-old child was hit by some of the pepper spray,” said Hill, adding that the Phoenix Fire Department was called to the scene to treat the girl. “I am told she was released and was expected to be OK.”

No one else was seriously injured, he said.

Phoenix police said Saturday night that five people were arrested during the protest and taken to Maricopa County Jail. Four were booked on suspicion of aggravated assault on police. The other faces disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Though the scene of the disturbance was cleared within minutes, the aftermath was chaotic. Protesters yelled obscenities at police officers in riot gear. One officer shook his pepper spray canister as he ordered people to keep moving. One protester wore goggles, and several others wrapped bandanas around their mouths.

Critics have accused deputies working in Arpaio’s immigration efforts of racial profiling, which the sheriff denies. He says his deputies approach people when they have probable cause to believe they had committed crimes.

Ten months ago, Arpaio learned he was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for alleged discrimination and unconstitutional searches. He says the investigation was prompted by his immigration efforts, although federal authorities haven’t provided details.

Since early 2008, Arpaio has run 13 immigration and crimes sweeps involving officers who flood a section of a city – in some cases heavily Latino areas – to seek out traffic violators and arrest other violators.

Arpaio’s power to make federal immigration arrests was stripped away three months ago by officials in Washington, but he continues his immigration efforts through the enforcement of two state laws.

A federal grand jury also is investigating Arpaio and his office on allegations of abusing his powers.

Law Enforsement enforces laws, Congress makes laws. Most Americans trust LE, most Americans do not trust Congress. A politician only looks to the next election. A statesman looks to the future. Can you blame us for pessimism? I think not.............God bless America. Land of the free, because of the brave.

All I can say is a load of these problems could be resolved if we had anything more effective than the liberal administration we have in Washington; there lies the real problems that Law Enforcement, and other careers are enduring. Like the Sheriff says...put the blame where it belongs in a proposal to President Obama.

In legal dictionaries across our country, people who cross our borders illegally are termed 'illegal alien'. Plain and simple. So many of you are correct in your assessments. They are here illegally and thus are criminals. Plain and simple. The simple fact is, they should be removed. Good people or not, they chose to become criminals when they crossed our borders and stayed. I am truly sympathetic to the idea that they are here "for a better life". So was the current governor of California and look how well doing it legally turned out for him. Regardless, criminals are criminals and should be dealt with as such. I have seen people jailed for stealing cans of dog food to feed their kids. Did their intent matter? No...not one bit. So why do we take these peoples "intent" into consideration?

Calling an illegal alien an undocumented worker is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist! I'm sick and tired of people defending illegal aliens. They claim these people are not criminals. Really? Other than the fact that everything from people with failure to appear warrants to murderers and sex offenders cross the border, the very fact that they cross "illegally" makes them, in fact, a criminal. People that cross the border illegally and remain in the country are criminals. Criminals are arrested by police. It's a rather simple concept that the bleeding hearts just don't grasp. Do not get me wrong, I have no problem with people from other countries moving here for a better life, a better opportunity. Just do it legally. The country can't take much more, and illegal immigration is a huge factor, affecting everything from school shortages to welfare, medical care to employment. It's a huge problem and if the President won't fix it, then I guess it's up to people like Sheriff Joe and his deputies. If you doubt anything I'm saying, come to beautiful southeast Arizona. But hurry, before the garbage (empty water bottles and tuna cans) cover the landscape or it all gets burned down by the groups of illegals building campfires in the mountains.

It is kinda funny the statement on the shirts "Who Would Jesus Deport" When in fact Jesus' family was in a since deported, after all they all had to go back to the country they came from to be counted in the census.

dirtydave1, you must have misunderstood what I posted. I agree with you 1,000% ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS - THAT'S RIGHT - ILLEGAL ALIEN (NOT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT) SHOULD BE DEPORTED! Illegal Immigrant is some bullcrap tital liberals came up with in a clever attempt to cloud the issue because they think the citizens of this nation are stupid. Bottom line, ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS SHOULD BE DEPORTED AND THE COST OF DOING IT SHOULD BE DEDUCTED FROM THE FINANCIAL AID WE GIVE TO THE COUNTRY THAT THE ILLEGAL ALIEN CAME FROM.

If there so concerned about the illegal immigrants being treated unfairly, then do as I did "BECOME A UNITED STATES CITIZEN" now I don't have to worry about being a illegal immigrant.
I'm with you Sheriff Joe Arpaio, I love the way you deal with the prisoners and how you have saved money.

michaeld123----- Why not leave the state, I'm sorry money was saved by his actions, come to California where you see first hand what happens when people like michaeld123 have there way and illegal immigrants roam free all over and cost me a hard working tax payer ENORMOUS amounts of tax dollars. P.S it's not wise to bash your place of employment on a public site like this one.

OK, now a last comment: As I read down the comment chain, michaeld123 (and I suspect that is as far as he can count) needs to crawl back under the rock he came from. Or, move away to a real communist/nazi country....he'll see a big difference in lifestyles. And learn your grammar/spelling. Really, "...neo Nazi peace of crap..." PEACE??? Here, I'll give you the answer "PIECE".

And that "data" you were reciting....was mostly CRAP itself. NOT TRUE. Yes, he is his own 'echelon' I mentioned in my earlier comment (so he too is a little politically motivated and self-serving - so I wouldn't vote him for president), but at least his head is screwed on right and focused on doing the right things. I have relatives in AZ and I've followed Joe's career for years, and YOU sir, michaeld123, are way off base.

GO AWAY! You're just a "wannabe" that couldn't be.

    You go Joe!

1 last comment: If I were Joe, I'd have the mother (or father, or whoever the idiot was that brought a 2yo baby miles into the desert for this idiotic protest) arrested for child endangerment. And then, seek the state of Arizona to investigate that parent for the removal of their child, for CLEARLY, they are UNFIT parent(s).

What the hell is up with the Feds now. Same old shit.....no balls to stand up to the "American Stupid". They're protesting for ILLEGAL immigrants. And, they themselves are committing crimes in the process. Screw-em, Blue em & Book em all.

Feds need to back away from Joe and try to engage they're pea-brains and focus on the real problems out there - Those same loud mouthed illegal protesters.

Somebody once told me the Feds were supposed to be on our side - the side of good, the side of justice.....you know, the good guys. WTF?! They lost their way. And, I'm sure it's not the front line feds. Most of em anyway. No sir, I'm certain it's the "Educated Idiots" in their echelon. It usually is. More politically motivated and self-serving individuals than anything else.

All I can say is: "Yankee go home, leave Joe alone".

He's the only one doing the right thing. And, God bless him, he's got balls.

PDPATCHES....u need to get a life!!!!! An Illegal Immigrant is just that.....Illegal. Bottom line. We used to be able to arrest somone who had no legal documentation.....not the case anymore. Thats sad. We need a way for this to work. A friend of mine who retired from the USBP told me that when he started, there were 3500 agents nation wide. Now there are over 16,000, and their hands are so tied, they can not do the job that 3500 did when he started.
