Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

Protest Against Sheriff Joe Turns Violent

PHOENIX, AZ – Thousands of immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn’t handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.

The three-mile walk that started in a west Phoenix park ended by afternoon at the Durango Jail Complex, a collection of five jails, where officials played music, including a record by singer Linda Ronstadt, to drown out noise made by protesters. Ronstadt took part in Saturday’s protest.

More Sheriff Joe...

Protesters chanted “Joe must go” as they approached the jail complex. One person carried a sign that said “We are human” and bore a picture of a lawman with a wolf’s face. A family of five wore T-shirts saying “Who would Jesus deport?”

For his part, Arpaio said he wasn’t bothered by the protesters and that they should be directing their frustrations at Congress because it has the power to change America’s immigration laws.

“They are zeroing in on the wrong guy,” Arpaio said. “They ought to be zeroing in on the president.”

The demonstration was peaceful until police say protesters near the end of the procession started throwing water bottles at officers. Phoenix Police Lt. Pat Hofmann said officers used pepper spray as they tried to separate protesters from an officer who was trying to take away the bottles.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said on-scene supervisors described a group of demonstrators purposefully disrupting the demonstration by assaulting several police officers and a police horse.

He said one demonstrator struck a police sergeant on the head and chest with a flagpole. Two others threw water bottles, possibly containing rocks, at other officers, but missed.

Hill also said a police officer on horseback was assaulted while her horse was mobbed, punched and pushed. The officer used pepper spray to stop the assault.

I agree with marqmd- Sheriff Joe for PRESIDENT- there would be some real changes (for the better) in America. As someone who was born and raised in the Phoenix area we support Joe. Ever wonder why he has been the Sheriff since 1992- cause people love the work he does, not just sitting around trying to make friends- HE WORKS.
I have an idea, lets stop giving illegals all of our benifits and I gaurantee the United States of America would have no problem balancing it's budget every year and all of the hard working, honest American citizens would be able to keep their jobs and not get laid off.
Keep up the great work Joe- We support you 100%.

The level of my anger I cannot begin to describe... So many things about this article jump out at me, however the most glaring issue is that if you are in the United States legally and have the right to work here legally, what is the problem? It's only those who are illegally here, or support those who are illegally here, that have an issue? And why would you look for illegal Mexican or other nationalities in a predominately white or other race neighborhood?? Like running radar in a cornfield.. Not gonna catch nor deter many speeders there... You look for those that are absconding where they might actually be located right??? Com'on people...think here!!!

If the feds did their job, he wouldn't have to! These people are breaking the law, that's the only REAL issue. People whining about racial profiling, but the Obama administration who is NOT protecting our borders. If they want to come here do it legally and there would be no problem. Of course, learn the language of the country you're going to. It doesn't make sense that we need to learn their language because they refuse to learn ours. Way to go Sheriff Joe!!!

I wish the policies instituted by "Sherrif Joe", and the procedures he employes were the RULE, and not the EXCEPTION. No, not "Joe must go"..."WAY TO GO JOE!"

I don't understant the incopetence of the people in Washington that wanted local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws and when one sheriff is doing what was ask they strip the power for federal arrests just because a group of illegals start complaining about being profiled. You can bet that the ACLU was behind some of this.

I live and work on the border of Mexico. I can say without reservation that the MAJORITY of these folks who come here illegally are normally honest, law-abiding citizens who come here simply to make a better life for themselves. However, starting their life in a new country by breaking the law just to get here is intolerable. Had these same folks come here through legal immigration, I would have welcomed them. After all, this country was BUILT by immigrants. Unfortunately, with the good must come the bad. In our stretch of the border alone last year, undocumented (aka "illegal") aliens from close to 100 countries were caught coming across illegally. Almost every day we hear over the radio a call for any officer who speaks "X" language! While some of these folks may have just been trying to come to the promised land, some may have been coming here to do us harm. It is these folks that Sheriff Arpaio and others are trying to keep out. I doubt that any of the anti-immigration folks would want these undesirable here either, but you cannot create a double-standard. You either enforce the immigration laws or you do not. There is no "in-between". If we start only looking for middle-eastern males wearing turnins, then I've no doubt that someone will claim we're profiling!!!

Keep up the good work Sheriff Joe. And, if you need a change of scenery, come to South Texas!

I say leave Joe alone, he has the balls to do something. Some say get behind America, here is a guy who does just that. He enforces the little law left to work with. We all should be so fortunate to have such a man. Hang in there Joe, God bless and good enforcement. Love you and your efforts.
