A 16-year veteran of the Delaware River Port Authority Police Department died early yesterday after he was hit while rushing across the Walt Whitman Bridge to help another officer who was handling a car accident.
About 1:30 a.m., Cpl. Christopher Milito, 40, of Media, left his car in the 300 block of Packer Avenue and was running across the five-lane highway when a Nissan Altima driving east on the bridge hit him.
Milito died about 2 a.m. at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. He was not married and had no children, a DRPA representative said.
The driver of the car that struck Milito was taken into custody by Philadelphia police. The driver’s name was not released.
