PHILADELPHIA – A masked gunman robbed a crowded Philadelphia movie theater Friday, wounding an off-duty police officer and a bystander, police said.

Lt. John Walker, a detective, said the gunman entered the Bridge Theater in West Philadelphia at about 7 p.m., The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. He took cash from a register where no clerk was present.

A Capitol Police officer who had come to the theater to see a movie identified himself to the robber, who opened fire. The two men exchanged shots.

The 42-year-old officer and a 22-year-old man were hit and were reported to be in stable condition at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. The officer fired three shots but investigators were unsure if any struck the gunman.

The police officer, part of a force based in Harrisburg, the state capital, is assigned to provide security at state buildings in Philadelphia.
