Line of Duty Deaths up 900% This Year

Line of Duty Deaths up 900% This Year

January 14, 2010

With just one day before January’s halfway point, line of duty deaths in 2010 are up 900% compared to the same time last year.

So far in 2010, ten law enforcement officers from nine different states have been killed in the line of duty: Four by gunfire and six in automobile or motorcycle crashes. As we honor their memories, and mourn their loss, every single person in the law enforcement community must also demand that the downward trend in deaths we’ve been experiencing over the past few years doesn’t come to end in 2010. Everyone must work together to remind rookies, veterans, and themselves that it is every cop’s responsibility to be safe out there.

Take it upon yourself to use and share these resources to assist you in that effort:

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial’s Drive Safely Campaign serves as a reminder to not only civilians, but also police officers, about the dangers posed on the roadways. Every officer and supporter should participate in the campaign.

For the raw numbers on the number of officers killed in vehicle crashes lately, visit the Officer Down Memorial Page and just take a look at the yearly breakdowns. The numbers are truly sobering.

I am personally calling on all officers to make a conscious decision to:

1) Wear your seatbelts

2) Remember that you’re no good as a backup officer if you don’t arrive

3) Always approach stopped vehicles in the safest location possible

One of the greatest honors a fallen officer can have is that his or her tragic loss saves the lives of other officers in the future. I urge everyone to honor each of this year’s fallen in that way.

For a complete list of this year’s fallen heroes, visit the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Not only is it a truly sad day, the tenth fallen officer being a friend on mine but all of these fine men and women who have lost their lives senslessly. We have got to do a better job of taking care of our own. I have been heavy hearted all day and this subject has been on my mind, eating at me all day. This really sucks.

when did LEO open season begin? There has been too many deaths in the line of duty this year. I hope and pray that you all stay safe and watch your six. I am still new to this job but, I don't want to see any of my brothers or sisters killed...... May god have mercy on the families affected.

I have said it for a long time, if you shoot at a LEO you should be executed even if you don't kill him and it should not take 20 years to do it. To try to injure a LEO you are taking a stance against our entire country and the values it holds precious because that badge represents our liberties and freedoms that make our country great.

The greatest honor a fallen officer should have is to know that his family will be taken care for ever and that his tragic loss saves the lives of others. To many widows are left with a one time payment for his or her death and then they are forgotten.
It is sad when the media only recognizes an officer when he is killed in the line of duty, but calls all professional sports players as heroes of the communities.
My daughter has been trying for over eight years to get attention to the needs of police who are injured in the line of duty. She has sent her letter to the current and previous president as well as numerous politicians, to no avail. The following is the link for her letter. http://policelink.monster.com/topics/24196/posts?page=1

L.E.O. Brother's and Sister's. All of us pray that we come home safe everyday that we work. But we also need to add in our prayers that God will watch over everyone serving in law enforcement. Really I do believe times are getting harder and criminals are getting bolder. God Bless you all. And may he give peace to the families that have lost a loved one in law enforcement.

    Humanity goes crazy!
In many countries, politicians have yet to recognize the signs of the times.
Let the dead colleagues serve as a warning.
    Stay safe & take care!!!!!!!
