OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – A wounded Oklahoma City police officer was in good condition Sunday, one day after a vehicle pursuit ended when a fellow officer gunned down his assailant.

Officer Kris Hunter remained at OU Medical Center following surgery. He was wounded in his left arm and received a graze wound to his left leg, police Capt. Patrick Stewart said. He was wounded about 5:10 p.m. Saturday, moments before officer Daniel Godsil fatally shot a driver who had sped away from an attempted traffic stop, Stewart said.

Investigators had not identified the suspect Sunday, Stewart said.

Officer Involved Shootings

Hunter also was involved in a police shooting July 3, 2006, in northwest Oklahoma City, according to The Oklahoman archives. He was investigating a caller’s report of a wanted man in the 300 block of NW 79 when Antonio Walker, then 21, approached him with a gun. Hunter shot Walker when he ignored orders to drop the weapon.

Walker’s felony case of pointing a firearm, which stems from the incident, is pending in Oklahoma County, online court records show. He filed a civil suit against Hunter, police and the city, but it was dismissed.

Hunter and another officer rescued a couple from their burning northwest Oklahoma City apartment on Feb. 5, 2004, according to The Oklahoman archives. Hunter and officer Clinton “Cody” Powell found a door slightly open at an apartment with smoke billowing out of it, charged in and dragged out a man and woman who appeared to be intoxicated and had either fallen asleep or passed out.

The incident Saturday started when Godsil attempted to pull over a black coupe near NE 13 and Kelham Avenue, Stewart said. The driver did not stop and sped away, and Hunter was attempting to throw spiked sticks in the path of the fleeing car when the driver shot him at NE 23 and Martin Luther King Ave.

The driver got out of the car about two blocks away, at NE 23 and Hood Street, and fired at Godsil, Stewart said. Godsil returned fire and mortally wounded the man, who died at a nearby hospital.

Police have not disclosed the reason Godsil tried to pull the man over. No one else was in the car, Stewart said.

Godsil is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting.

Hunter and Godsil graduated from the March 2003 police academy. Both men won class awards.

this is another example of the total lack of respect for LEO's and for life in general. It supports the idea that we must be ever vigilant on and off duty. Let's hope that some ACLU dirtbag don't try to turn this around and make it all about why the officer shot the perp. Best wishes for the two officers involved.

It doesn't seem right that Officer Godsil is on administrative leave for avenging Officer Hunter's shooting.
