MISHAWAKA, Ind. — A Mishawaka policeman and his police dog have died in a traffic accident in the northern Indiana city.
Mishawaka Police Chief Mike Samp says 42-year-old Cpl. James Szuba (SOO’-buh) and his dog Ricky died Saturday night.
Szuba was providing assistance on a call when the squad car was sideswiped by another vehicle.
Samp says the officer was using lights and siren on his car when the accident occurred. However, a witness, Dale Edmiston, told WSBT-TV that Szuba’s emergency lights were on, but not his siren.
A news release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says the second vehicle was driven by 31-year-Shawn Devine of Mishawaka.
