Vest Saves Ambushed Officer's Life, Shooter Killed

MOUNT ORAB, OH – Authorities say a Mount Orab man who had been booked and released on drunk driving charges returned to the police station and shot an officer in the back, then was fatally shot himself.

Mount Orab Police Chief Bryan Mount says 61-year-old George Ruby of Mount Orab was killed about 4 a.m. Sunday. Patrolman Justin Conley was shot but was not seriously injured.

A few hours earlier, Conley had arrested Ruby on drunk driving charges. Ruby had been taken to the station 30 miles east of Cincinnati and released to his wife.

Police say Ruby returned later and opened fire when Conley walked out. Conley used his radio to call an officer inside the station, and the two exchanged fire with Ruby.

Ruby was pronounced dead at Mercy Mount Orab Hospital.

The state is investigating.

Thank GOD he was smart and had his vest!! i'm always on my husband to wear his vest. Even on off duty jobs, you never know what you wil come in contact with, or have to break from the job to be back-up. He hates the thing in this FL heat, but I keep telling him I'd rather be married to you than be a rich widow!! Please, all the LEOs on here, here me when I tell you...PLEASE, don't get complacent... There is no such thing as being able to "read" someone to guage your safety!! Even the devel himself, can smile! You are too appreciated (at least by this girl). I grieve for every LEO and pray for their families when a LEO is lost. I'm a friend to you all.
