Man Bits Officer at Bar Fight

BURLINGTON, Iowa – A Burlington man has been arrested for allegedly biting a police officer who was trying to break up a fight at a bar early on New Year’s Day.

Thaddeus Purnell is charged with serious assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Police were called to the Boogaloo Cafe. When officers arrived, authorities say Purnell was standing over another man and punching him.

Police say when an officer tried to pull Purnell off, Purnell allegedly bit the officer on the forearm and refused to let go.

When another officer assisted, Purnell slipped out of his coat and fled from the scene. Officials say he was caught when he slipped in the snow.

Jail officials on Monday say Purnell was being held on $5,000 bond. They did not know if he had an attorney.
