Once-Deported Illegal Alien Kills Female Deputy

Once-Deported Illegal Alien Kills Female Deputy

The Salt Lake City Tribune

January 05, 2010

The fallen deputy has been identified as Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox of the Millard County Sheriff’s Office.

Update: Millard Country Sheriff Robert A. Dekker has informed the media that the shooter, Roberto Miramontes Roman, is a Mexican national, has been previously arrested for theft charges and has been previously deported from the United States as an illegal immigrant.

A Millard County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Tuesday, and a statewide manhunt for the suspect may have narrowed down to a few blocks of west Salt Lake City.

Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was gunned down about 1 a.m., during a traffic stop a mile east of Delta. Her body was found by a second deputy, who was responding to a request for backup. Fix, a mother of two, had been with the Millard County Sheriff’s Department five years.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Nigbur identified the “prime suspect” sought in the shooting as Roberto Miramontes Roman. He is described as a 37-year-old Latino, 5-foot-7, 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Roman is possibly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, and is considered dangerous. Anyone with information on Roman’s whereabouts is urged to immediately call 911.

“We have information that he’s not going to be taken alive,” Nigbur said.

Roman has a significant criminal history, including drug offenses, and a court-ordered illegal-immigration-related deportation.

Millard County officials said the suspect vehicle, an orange Corvette, had been stopped as part of an investigation into recent thefts. The suspect had sped away from the scene by the time the second deputy arrived.

The search the suspect quickly focused to Salt Lake City, where police found a vehicle — believed to be the Corvette — near 300 South and 1100 West. Police also were keeping a lookout for Advertisement a gray 1995 Cadillac Deville, license plate number 713-PAB, that the suspect may now be driving.

By 7 a.m., SWAT officers were seen in the area of 300 South and 1100 West. Police would not confirm that they may have located the suspect, though it appeared a containment area was being set up. Two local schools — Guadalupe and Franklin — were closed and traffic through the area blocked while officers went door-to-door, searching for the suspect.

Nigbur said three SWAT teams were deployed in the area, focusing on “two or three” homes believed to be occupied by relatives of the suspect. No neighborhood evacuations were immediately ordered, however.

Roman has a criminal history beginning in 1992 with a misdemeanor drug distribution charge to which he pleaded guilty in Fillmore’s 4th District Court.

Then in 1996 and 1997, Roman was charged in Millard County with a handful of felonies in two different cases, including drug charges, receiving stolen property and a weapons count.

He resolved the cases by pleading guilty to one count of third-degree felony drug possession and one count of second-degree felony drug possession with intent to distribute.

He was sentenced to prison for up to 15 years in June 1997.

Roman was paroled Sept. 15, 1998, and apparently completed his parole successfully, according to Utah Board of Pardons and Parole spokesman Jim Hatch.

Court records show that at the time the crimes were committed, Roman was a resident of Delta. All three cases were investigated by the Millard County Sheriff’s Office.

Meanwhile, in Millard County, law enforcement ordered closure of U.S. 50 in both directions just east of Delta as their investigation into the slaying got under way this morning. The road has since been reopened, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

We seem to be getting behind in the war on everything. This hero was lost due to a failed deportaton system that cannot keep them on the other "side of the river". If the judicial system had kept this loser in prison as he was sentenced, he would have still been there. I do not believe in early release period, if you get 5 years to 99 then you should serve it. How many more law enforcement or innocent citizens will loose their lives at the hands of ones who do not even belong here, or have been released early. This guy had both on his side. It is only a matter of time until we have a "Jurez Battleground" on this side of the fence. Rest in Peace Deputy and know your devotion and sacrafice will never ber fogotten.

RIP Deputy Fox. My prayers to your family and fellow officers as they struggle with such a senseless loss. Thank you for your dedication to the leo community and giving your all to protect the rest of us. The liberal politicians and their appointees to the parole boards should be held responsible for letting these illegal dangerous criminals walk all over the citizens of this country. Serving 15 months of a 15 year sentence is a travesty and completely inexcusable. When will the liberal bas***** learn that deporting someone only amounts to shipping them back across a border that doesn't actually exist? The voices of reason need to be heard more loudly than the panty wastes that cry for the criminals who laugh at how easy it is to "get over on the system." Perhaps the citizens of this country should require our government to develop a program where the parole board members who release these violent criminals should have to personally face the families of victims and explain how they can justify releasing a criminal so prisons won't be overcrowded. If the illegals want the same rights as we true citizens enjoy, that should include the right to serve ALL of the prison time they earned. Heroes like Deputy Fox should report to their new watch in Heaven with the knowledge that their sacrifice was not in vain. Godspeed Deputy Fox, you are in my prayers

Somebody killed a deputy sheriff today .... And a part of America died…. A piece of our country she swore to protect .... Will be buried with her at her side.... The beat that she walked was a battlefield too,.... Just as if she had gone off to war, .... Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast .... To her name they will add a gold star.... The suspect that shot her will stand up in court .... With counsel demanding his rights,.... While a young widowed father must work for his kids .... And spend many long, lonely nights... .. Yes, somebody killed a deputy today…. Maybe in your town or mine,.... While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors.... A cop put her life on the line.... Now her ghost walks the beat on a dark city street, .... And she stands at each new rookie's side; .... She answered the call… of herself gave her all,.... And a part of America died.

    RIP Deputy Fox.

    Rest In Peace sister,
It is gods job to forgive the perp for his sins, it is our (LEOs) job to arrange the meeting for them. I hope the politicians and judges (both idiots, but thats my oppinion) will sleep well tonight because the LEOs are working hard to protect them and for a lot less than what they make.
Thanks for listening, I needed to get it of my chest.

RIP Deputy Fox. May the angels watch over you and your family.

I want to know how the hell did this slug pass through the US Border Patrol, yet AGAIN? Guys like him give my nationality a bad name, and I'm only 1/4th Mexican! This has to stop! And I do hope the SOB does get his.
Again, we are losing too many of our brothers and sisters for senseless crimes and seems no end in sight. I love my job as a dispatcher and I love my brother and sister LEOs, and each time I read another officer down, a part of me dies with them.
