Once-Deported Illegal Alien Kills Female Deputy
The Salt Lake City Tribune
January 05, 2010
The fallen deputy has been identified as Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox of the Millard County Sheriff’s Office.
Update: Millard Country Sheriff Robert A. Dekker has informed the media that the shooter, Roberto Miramontes Roman, is a Mexican national, has been previously arrested for theft charges and has been previously deported from the United States as an illegal immigrant.
A Millard County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Tuesday, and a statewide manhunt for the suspect may have narrowed down to a few blocks of west Salt Lake City.
Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was gunned down about 1 a.m., during a traffic stop a mile east of Delta. Her body was found by a second deputy, who was responding to a request for backup. Fix, a mother of two, had been with the Millard County Sheriff’s Department five years.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Nigbur identified the “prime suspect” sought in the shooting as Roberto Miramontes Roman. He is described as a 37-year-old Latino, 5-foot-7, 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Roman is possibly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, and is considered dangerous. Anyone with information on Roman’s whereabouts is urged to immediately call 911.
“We have information that he’s not going to be taken alive,” Nigbur said.
Roman has a significant criminal history, including drug offenses, and a court-ordered illegal-immigration-related deportation.
Millard County officials said the suspect vehicle, an orange Corvette, had been stopped as part of an investigation into recent thefts. The suspect had sped away from the scene by the time the second deputy arrived.
The search the suspect quickly focused to Salt Lake City, where police found a vehicle — believed to be the Corvette — near 300 South and 1100 West. Police also were keeping a lookout for Advertisement a gray 1995 Cadillac Deville, license plate number 713-PAB, that the suspect may now be driving.
By 7 a.m., SWAT officers were seen in the area of 300 South and 1100 West. Police would not confirm that they may have located the suspect, though it appeared a containment area was being set up. Two local schools — Guadalupe and Franklin — were closed and traffic through the area blocked while officers went door-to-door, searching for the suspect.
Nigbur said three SWAT teams were deployed in the area, focusing on “two or three” homes believed to be occupied by relatives of the suspect. No neighborhood evacuations were immediately ordered, however.
Roman has a criminal history beginning in 1992 with a misdemeanor drug distribution charge to which he pleaded guilty in Fillmore’s 4th District Court.
Then in 1996 and 1997, Roman was charged in Millard County with a handful of felonies in two different cases, including drug charges, receiving stolen property and a weapons count.
He resolved the cases by pleading guilty to one count of third-degree felony drug possession and one count of second-degree felony drug possession with intent to distribute.
He was sentenced to prison for up to 15 years in June 1997.
Roman was paroled Sept. 15, 1998, and apparently completed his parole successfully, according to Utah Board of Pardons and Parole spokesman Jim Hatch.
Court records show that at the time the crimes were committed, Roman was a resident of Delta. All three cases were investigated by the Millard County Sheriff’s Office.
Meanwhile, in Millard County, law enforcement ordered closure of U.S. 50 in both directions just east of Delta as their investigation into the slaying got under way this morning. The road has since been reopened, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

My heart goes out to this officer and her family. As for the alien I don't know where he is from but, any alien who is deported can and will come back to the US. The government can put up all of the fences and camera's that they want but, you still need ground troops to catch them.
As for Ramos and Compean I understand that lot of folks are made about them going to jail but, I have the chance to read the court transipts and there one thing that they both failed to do and this is where they got in trouble. Both of them fired their weapons and they both didn't write up and incident report. This is standard policy for the Border Patrol, ICE and CBP.
The funny thing is that their first line, second line and all the way to the chief in El Paso no one asked if memo's were written. The Border Patrol let these two agents hang, when asked what did they learn at the Border Patrol Academy dealing firearms both of them said that they were trained to "kill". If anyone on here is an LEO we all know that the word "kill" is never used. We shoot to stop the actions of the other person. I think that their lawyer had no idea how the patrol works and what they really do, they should have looked up an old timer and gotten his or her imput to help save these two agents. Stay safe.....

George Bush allowed the jailing and persecution of two of our own. Ramos and Compean. For that there is no crediting GWB with keeping this country safe. Open borders to anything that can walk across them including those from the "official" countries of "official" terrorism.
Our sister lost her life to that "policy" IMHO it is inappropriate to say the least to dishonor this woman whom gave all on the alter of GWB's open borders loving policy. To think otherwise is unthinkable.

Gee, another dirtbag who was sentenced to jail, let out early, and now an officer is dead because the courts didn't do their job.
What a shock!

Your zeal is appreciated. But it's your onesidedness that is outstanding. Your opion appears to be that political correctness materialized only one year ago. And yes, our judicial system is failing. But, it has been for a long time, not in one year. Other than saying so, what are the indications that our country is any less safe? There is entirely too much talk and less walk! I served this country, in uniform, all over the world for nearly twentytwo years, so I know what patriotism is. You are of the Limbaugh/Hannity school of thought. Two "patriots" that never served in the military. I have worn the star of a deputy sheriff for eighteen and a half years, so I know, first hand, how LEO throughout this nation feel. People are heard every four years when it comes to the election of president. You and yours appear to have forgotten that. Our borders have not closed, terroism exists, crooks are let out of jail every day. This did not begin in one year. Therefore to preach about "self centered career minded political asses" as if they just appeared one year ago, borders on the stupid. Therefore I cannot "take your words to the bank". Unless the teller is deaf and blind, the check would bounce.

I must agree with you on one thing except Pres. G.W. Bush kept America safe and set a higher standard for LE with backup and not fancy rhetorical words that grow cold and very old after awhile. It is unfortunate that because of our failed Judical system we are losing the war on crimes that should be handled with the LEO of this country equipted with the laws that keep these scumbags off he streets who think they can take an AK -47and mow down an officer at will. Too many are falling at the hands of those who cry out for vegenace and use terrorism pull off their schemes while holding the book of POLICITAL CORRECTNESS. Thank you for you input but I stand by what LEO all over this nation are doing every day of their lives. to protect the innocent and when is this group of self centered career minded politcal asses going to realize that we are at war at home. and abroad. Forget the secondary stuff such as Govt run HealthCare. Govt doesn't work unless the 'PEOPLE ARE HEARD and under this guise of so call Change nothing has worked yet except a whole lot of smoke and mirrors. May God received this young devoted Officer of the Law with great compassion as she was mowed down doing her job with little to offer in the way of resitance. So..take my words to the bank!

Vigilant 101, you should become a little more vigilant about our recent American history. You constantly use this site as a forum for your ultra right wing rhetoric. You mentioned aircraft security. Must we assume that you do not know the circumstances of 911? What about the so-called "shoe bomber"? Where were your right wing bombast after these occurances? One of your heroes(Reagan) granted amnesty to illegals, while another(G.W. Bush) attempted to do the same thing. And if I remember correctly, Bush's proposal was supported by that great patriot, McCain. This is a story about the tragic death of a fellow law enforcement officer. I cannot speak for all of my brothers and sisters that wear the badge, but I for one do not believe that we need to hear your political garbage at this time.
