NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford police officer is being investigated for allegedly posting a picture of what appears to be a dead body on her Facebook page, reports the Standard-Times.

The photo depicts an apparent crime scene. The body is face-down on a couch, next to a coffee table. The floor is cluttered with trash.

New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said the picture — if it is authentic — may depict an overdose victim. It is unclear whether the person is a man or woman.

“There will be an internal investigation to see if this is true,” Silva said. “Right now, this is just an allegation.”

Regardless of how the person died, that is just disrespectful to the deceased and those who loved him/her. I hope this Officer learns a valuable lesson on her way to the unemployment office.

I've seen enough of these facebook stories and I've bit my tongue long enough. Not all social networking sites are created equal. I do not use facebook--I use linkedin.com. I do not work for linkedin nor do I get paid for this endorsement, but linkedin is the right social networking site for mature people who do have common sense.

First of all, why is this even news? Until it has been determined that the officer has in fact done something wrong, there is nothing to report. This could turn out to be an innocent mistake or misunderstanding, but the damage has already been done to the reputation of the officer and the department, thanks to the media.

If the allegations are true, then what the officer did was wrong. Either way, this is just one more reason to avoid social media sites altogether if at all possible. At the very least, everyone (especially LE) should use the highest discretion in what they post.

As Whalewatcher said, common sense unfortunately seems to be a rarity these days.

If it's true...that will be one decision she will regret for a long time. Not to bright...
