A Grant County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a single-car crash about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, according to Grant County Sheriff Frank DeTrolio.

The deputy, John Bernard, of Moses Lake was on patrol when his car crashed and rolled on a rural road near Ephrata.

A witness called 911. Ambulance crews and other deputies responding to the call found Bernard, 52, of Moses Lake, dead at the scene.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident, according to a statement released by the Sheriff.

Bernard had been with the Grant County Sheriff four years, previously working as a corrections officer in Grant County and as an officer with Ephrata Police.

He is survived by a wife and two sons, one of whom is also a Grant County Sheriff’s deputy.
