A one-car crash in Holden claimed the life of an off-duty Worcester police officer and father of four whom colleagues remembered yesterday as “a man with a big heart.”

Mark Bisnette, 38, was heading home at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday in his Ford Explorer when it slid off snowy Reservoir Street, broke a utility pole and rolled over, Holden police said.

He was rushed to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

Bisnette joined the force in 1996 and served as the president of his recruiting class. He lived with his wife and four children in Paxton.

Worcester police released a lengthy statement recalling Bisnette as generous, and always available to volunteer and contribute to charities.

“He had an infectious positive personality which will be sorely missed,” the statement reads. “Officer Bisnette was a giver, he gave of his time, he gave of his efforts and he gave of himself.”

Holden police said they continue to investigate the crash. Bisnette was wearing a seatbelt and was the only person in the vehicle, police said.
