Police Commissioner Hospitalized After Collapse
Associated Press
December 31, 2009
CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (AP) – Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson is expected to remain hospitalized for the next day or two after collapsing during a news conference.
Gipson was in suburban Cheektowaga to discuss a new law involving driving while intoxicated when he fell to the floor while standing behind a podium with other law enforcement officers Wednesday morning.
Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge says he was taken by ambulance to Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, where doctors described him as light-headed and weak but showing no signs of a stroke or heart attack. He is listed in stable but guarded condition.
Gipson, who’s 61, announced in 2006 that he was being treated for prostate cancer.
