RICHMOND, Va. – A state legislator is renewing his effort to undo a Virginia State Police requirement that its chaplains deliver only non-denominational prayers at official events.

Del. Charles Carrico claims that the 2008 directive from State Police Superintendent Steven Flaherty violates the chaplains’ constitutional right to free exercise of religion.

Religion in Policing

The retired trooper and Grayson County Republican introduced legislation in the 2009 General Assembly reversing the order. It failed by one vote in a Senate committee, and Grayson has refiled it for the session that begins next month.

Flaherty issued the order after a federal appeals court upheld a Fredericksburg City Council policy requiring nonsectarian prayers to open council meetings.

We have already removed prayer from schools, look where that has lead us. Now we are being told to "non-denominationalize" prayer. When when they realize God is going to get fed up with the way He is treated by the government and so called leaders by making up all these rules and regulations against His Word. They are so afraid to step on the toes of world they are forgetting we really do answer to a higher power in the end.

Prayer is a freedom of choice, and should never be tampered with...I fear for anyone that interferes with anything related to God and prayer. If we aren't really careful in this country we'll lose the right to pray period. God have mercy on those interfering, as they need to read your holy bible. United we stand, and divided we will fall in this nation.

Chaplains are trained to pray in a number of demonational fashions. Any legislation that requires a Chaplain to pray in a non-denomational way is wrong. I hope the legislator succeeds in his effort to let the Chaplains get back to the work of the Lord.

I was raised to be respectful regardless of the religion or religious sect of the person praying. Any government legislation to prayer is the result of someone being offended because A) Someone prayed different from another, or B) Someone simply prayed when another did not believe. You don't lose your religious or non-religious beliefs or go up in smoke by listening to another pray just because they pray different from you. Even if you don't believe, what is the harm done? What ever happened to simple respect?

    I also agree with Jonas,

    BUMP!!!!!
