Off-Duty Deputy Fires As Burglar Jumping Out Neighbor’s Window

The AP via YellowBrix

December 28, 2009

OXON HILL, Md. – Prince George’s County police say an off-duty Alexandria sheriff’s deputy exchanged gunfire with a burglary suspect he saw climb out of a window of a neighbor’s house in Oxon Hill.

Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne says neither the deputy nor the burglar was struck in the exchange Sunday morning on Addison Drive.

Police say someone alerted the deputy to a break-in at his neighbor’s home and he found the men leaving through a window. Police say one of the men fired in the deputy’s direction and he returned fire, then took cover and called 911.

Lawhorne says the deputy, whom he declined to identify, has been placed on routine, paid administrative leave.

coshane, one heck of a lot of DC is a Ghetto. PG County where this happened is next to DC and a very hard area for the most part. But like everywhere, you have your nice areas mixed in.

chiefdennis, good one. I agree, why is it ALWAYS the LEOs fault. Just like it's my fault when a vehicle is parked in a tow zone. Glad the deputy wasn't hurt. Can't say that for the perp

how about "Burglar fires at off duty officer, officer returns fire"? Should have grabbed the 870 instead of his pistol.

How does the title of this article reflect what truly happened here? Just another example of the biased image the AP tries to cast LE in.

The feeling you get from the title is that the officer shot at a fleeing suspect....why is not mentioned that the suspect tried to KILL THE OFFICER in the title? Oh, I remember, because that might be a little closer to the truth!

Just as a reminder, you are always on duty. Especially when your neighbors know that you are a police officer! I hope that he called 911 before getting involved though, unlike what the article says.
